I've now found out some more information in my quest for my Grandfather's birth certificate and based on his marriage certificate this is what I know:

Joseph Patrick Ward b 1893 Ireland
Father Michael Ward
Mother's name: Kathleen or Katherine Kelley (both listed on the Marriage Certificate)
Roman Catholic

Anyone have any suggestions for me as to where to search next other than the LDS Census records, which I can't get to for some time? I looked in the UHF site, but nothing came up with Kath____ Kelley.

Have you tried spelling the mother's name Cath_ instead of Kath_? (also Kelly rather than Kelley?)

Yes...have found a bit more information in that Michael Ward didn't live in Belfast in 1907 I believe - so back to the Bangor theory and more digging - wasn't able to find him through the Bangor Catholic Church either though, so am hoping that he appears on the 1911 Census and that it is online soon!

marriage. MICHAEL WARD TO MARY KELLY (she could have been mary catherine/katherine) 29-1-1893.@ belfast r.c. church, belfast urban no.6 belfast, antrim.

births. MICHAEL 21-5-1869. BRIDGET 22-2-1868. BOTH BORN BELFAST, BELFAST NO.6 ANTRIM.

parents. JAMES WARD & SARAH MURPHY.

Thanks Mary - I will have to investigate this line - Joseph was born Jan 1891 according to  his army records ( I think I wrote 1893 by mistake) - not unusual to have the marriage after the baby though!
What are the births - possibly his Father and Aunt? Sorry - a bit slow this morning.

I also found  a reference to a Catherine Ward that died in 1911 Co Down, and married Michael Ward 1883 Co Antrim that I need to look into as well as a marriage between Michael Ward and Catherine Kelly in 1890 in Co Antrim.
