I hope that I am not being silly by thinking that this photo was taken in England! Maybe Shropshire? Maybe Cumberland?
A lost relative has marked an 'X' above a house to the left of the church. Does anyone have any ideas? Any address guesses?
My deepest gratitude for your time,
Donna
-
Hi Donna
There is in fact a direction sign in the middle of the photograph, but it would need a scan at a higher resolution to try to decypher it.
It certainly looks like an English view.
cheers
Paul
-
Thank you very much, Paul,
I'm so happy that it looks like an English view. My 90 year old Mom thinks that the photo was taken in Shropshire... but, her ancestors also come from Cumberland.
Yes indeed, there is a sign that I've tried to magnify with a glass.
I'll try to do it via scanner...
-
Hi,
I'm not a car expert, but didn't the older cars have number plates which identified which town they were from?
I seem to remember using a RAC/AA book as a child on a long journey to do this.
Perhaps if you did the same with the car it may help?
Sue
-
The car at the cross roads seems to be on the correct side of the road for Britain - and isn't that a Mini on the left of the photo?
Also in the enlargement, I see the fanlights open in the windows in the house behind the fence. That is generally an English thing.
Is there a postmark at all?
Nell
-
It's ALMOST possible to read the sign pointing left!
-
Hi Donna,
If I read that road sign number think it is B1283 - which is in Durham.
Anyone see a different number?- not quite clear enough for me!
Cheers
Keith
-
Oh my! Thank you Sue and Little Nell...
Licence plates + cars are over my head for Canada...let-alone Britain! :)
This picture has no postmarks nor any other markings...except the 'X' marked in blue ink above the house to the left of the church. There is a gluey substance on the back which makes me think that it might have been a calendar picture.
Oh! As I'm posting a reply, others are answering ... ty to Keith and Trystan... this site is so wonderful!
Donna
-
My husband thinks I've lost it!
I'm sitting in front of the computer with a magnifying glass and one eye shut trying to read the road sign.....
My money is on B1243 which is at South Skirlaugh, near Kingston on Hull.
Ring any bells????
Indi in California
-
Should have said - the car heading towards us is an Austin A35 - so nearly certainly England - 1955
Keith
-
Oh Man! I am literally laughing out loud, Indi!
Please tell your hubby that I am forever grateful for anyone that can help me. I've done the magnifying glass thingy... but, I'm past that 40 year old stage... meaning: my eyes go goofy. :)
I honestly do not have any bells ringing unless they come from Shropshire or Cumberland. AND, even then, you must spell everything out for me... darn newbies! :)
Should have said - the car heading towards us is an Austin A35 - so nearly certainly England - 1955
Yes indeed, Keith! That would be about the time range... I was thinking about 1953?
TY all, Donna
-
I agree with the B1243
According to the 1:25,000 map South Skirlaugh has a church with a tower - not steeple.
Looking along the B1243 Rise has a steepled church but doesn't seem to have enough houses.
Sigglesthorne = tower
Catwick = tower
Long Riston = tower
(there aren't many steeples in teh area!)
P ;D
-
Looking at Skirlaugh - there is a chapel today on a junction which has the B1243 in the right direction from it. Long long shot but maybe the church has lost it's steeple? And is now a chapel? [Red Arrow]
Pam
Or the road number maybe wrong ::)
-
Roads in Shropshire begin with 4 or 5
Roads in Cumberland with 5 or 6
So unless we are reading the sign wrongly - don't think the place is in either county!
Keith
-
TY all!
Please let me try this:
-
Do the shadows help us at all determine whether we are looking North?
(just an idea - sorry)
-
I think that the photo is a bit later. The car on the left is an Austin 1100 and I believe that they were made in the early sixties. The second car approaching could be a Ford Cortina and that puts it at about the same time.
-
Hi,
The car plate looks like a group of 3 letters and then 3 numbers.
This would indicate it was registered prior to 1963 when the letter at the end indicated year of registration.
Of course this doesn't help much, as it could just be an old car.
Sue
-
OK,
Found a site to give the original registration location of old uk plates.
If I am reading this correctly as MED 870, then...
MED 870 - When was it Issued?
This registration was first made available in 1954.The original office for this letter combination is Warrington C.B.C.
What is the plate?
This is the link,
http://www.wanadoo.newreg.com/home/search/index.html?was_it_focus=yes&was_it_reg=med+870
Can someone help as I'm off to work now.
Sue
-
Just looked at all the churches in Skirlaugh (courtesy of
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Swine/index.html)
and there's no obvious match. Might be a nearby town therefore.
Paul
-
Hey guys,
I get back from working night shift and log in to see if we have identified the plate on the car and...nothing!
What happened, were you all asleep while I worked?!!!!
Ok let's be serious.
Can anyone make out the registration plate on the car in the foreground
If we have the correct letters/numbers we can identify where the car is from. Then we just have to hope it is a local car and not Aunt Ann on holiday from somewhere!
Get out the magnifying glasses what does the plate say?
Sue
-
Sorry sjbc ... we need to get on the car's case!
-
Looks to me like the registration ends in a "C" - new about 1965. It looks like my old Morris 1100!
Nigel
-
A couple of non-car thoughts.
The houses and the chapel look clean - probably that pebbles and concrete mix. This suggests a non-industrial area. The steeple is dark - which may be a red sandstone?
Given the shadow the picture looks to have been taken around midday either north-south or south-north. The B road on the sign then heads either east or west to start with. The unclassified road opposite might be a clue, though I can't see much - maybe ends ...Manor?
Nigel
Adding to the confusion!
-
Sorry sjsbc... I WAS asleep while you were working! :)
After much eye exercise, I believe that the car plate might read:
I- L 0 570
and if I cross my eyes just so, the street sign numbers may be: 1243 or 3243
Many thanks everyone,
Donna
-
It looks like there's something hanging on the outside of the church between the two windows. Is there some writing on it or are my eyes deceiving me?
-
I think Al's right - a board of some description: but if we can't make out the roadsign, what's our chance of reading that board? :)
Nigel's contribtion should help us - which police department do you work for, Nige? ;)
-
The number looks like 1382 to me. Is there such a B number? What board outside the church ???
Donna have you done this deliberately to drive us all potty?
I'm doing the same with the magnifying glass. Everytime hubby pops his head round the door, I'm positioning it every which way over the photos (which I have printed up).
Can you see any more clue's on the original ?
Baffled, but enjoying the challenge. :D
Su
-
Su - there are people who are VERY interested in B roads (I kid you not).
Have a look at http://www.ukroads.plus.com/digest/b1000-b1999.html
-
Can't be the B1382, there are no places that would fit on that short road - even the delightfully named Prickwillow.
Paul - no police training here, but I do know people in the FBI. Thinking that they may view this challenge as a waste of their time & resources? Could try - please bail me out!
Nigel
-

I think Al's right - a board of some description: but if we can't make out the roadsign, what's our chance of reading that board?
You have a point Paul. Even if we could read the board it probably says something like "The Lord will provide" which might actually be the only way of getting an answer to where the photo was taken. :)
-
I agree with ndedross that the car in the foreground is an 1100 and it looks like a 'C' reg which puts it registered in 1965. The rear car approaching is a Mark 1 Ford Cortina which backs up the 1960's date as does the hairstyle of the person by the roadsign.
Any chance of a really hi-res scan of the roadsign?
-
I believe you Paul ;D I'd rather tootle along a B road than a motorway any day of the week. Prickwillow sounds a nice place for a picnic.
Everytime I stare at the road sign I see a different number :o Does the sign pointing right look like two names or one long one ?
Cross-eyed Su :o
-
:) Don't know if it's any help,
But I think churches always have the altar window facing East. So the doors in this photo would be facing West.
The shadow looks like early afternoon, summer clothes on people, makes shadows short.
After big debates here the front car is a Prefect.
;D Lesanne. and all the family ;D
-
The car on the right could be a Prefect or a Poplar?
The road sign right looks to have a two word place name and no designation - so Unclassified.
Nigel
-
So Mablethorpe's out then ;D
Su
-
Mablethorpe is always out!?
Good cartch on the church orientation - the picture had to be taken from the south looking north.
Nigel
-
I'll try to paste better pictures of the sign and licence plate.
Gosh Su! I hope I'm not driving anyone potty! Er... whatever that means! :)
I don't see any other clues... but then I thought the church was the only clue. I don't think it's a sign on the church... it seems to be part of the building.
The hair does seem a tad too long for the 50's.
-
I've gone all giddy now :o North South East West ... speaking as one who doesn't know her left from her right, which way is up ???
The numbers have changed now to 1189 ... or is that 3386?
Donna can you tell us anything more about the photo ?
Su
-
Does it look like something something CK something on the signpost to anyone else ?
If you sit back and squint, you get a better picture.
Su
-
SQUINT? I'll need a new eye test after looking at this piccie! :o
-
Thank goodness, I thought my glasses had misted over with all the squinting :o
Su
-
8) where does the B 3248 go?
-
It runs through Clovelly Dykes in Devon
-
;D That's no good then??
Perhaps that's the holiday cottage. um... not hilly enough for Devon.
;D
-
;D What is that windmill.ish shape,
just up to the right of the signpost? ::)
-
Hey Lesanne - we can't rule anything out!
I think Duckcharm's mother holds the key to this: Shropshire or Cumbria.
There's something painfully familiar about this view (but I bet we're all of us thining the same by now; by next week we'll all have convinced ourselves that we went to a wedding there!)
-
;D Yep, Dig out all those old photies, I bet someone has this place.
Wouldn't be suprised if those folks aren't waiting for something at the church...
And the tale continues...
-
Lesanne, the windmill is X marks the spot i.e. the house the person who sent the photo was staying in (I think).
Paul, you're right ! It was 1966 and I wore a pale blue frock and jacket with matching shoes and bag. :D
Su
-
X marks the spot
This has to be the worst Spot the Ball competition I've ever seen!
Su - you were there TOO! Wasn't the vicar awful? :)
(NOW, LETS GET BACK TO THE SERIOUS BUSINESS OF IDENTIFYING THIS CHARMING ENGLISH ROAD JUNCTION...)
-
:) Yep X marks the spot but there is a salt cellar shape above the roof,
with what looks like a long ariel.
And the yarn con.......
-
Lesanne's right ... thought it might either be another church or maybe something like a pub.
Duckcharm - why not post us a list of the towns and villages your Cumbrian / Shropshire rellies lived in?
Paul
-
:) I don't know if they have windmills up there as we do in Sussex. :-\
It could be the old type of police radio mast, so there could an area station there. :)
I've only been to the Lake Dist. and most of those buildings are the local stone. :(
Never done Shropshire. If I knew how to print this piccy off I could show an old
customer that comes down from Cumbria every now and then. But he's not long gone
back to Cumbria. :-X and that would be cheating.......
-
that would be cheating.......
We'd forgive you! :)
I've posted a couple of messages on the Cumbria and Shropshire pages appealing for help. Fingers crossed!
-
My eyes have finally merged ... I'm off to bed.
I'll be dreaming of windmills and vicars all night at this rate.
Hope someone solves the mystery before morning.
Night all.
;)
-
:) From Newcastle across to Windermere all the B roads start with 62. >:(
What do we think the number is.?
-
My eyes have finally merged ... I'm off to bed.
I'll be dreaming of windmills and vicars all night at this rate.
Night all.
;)
And socks...
And naval oficers ...
;)
Goodnight - I'm off too: we'll have to leave it to our transatlantic and southern hemisphere colleagues to work out!
-
Yep, Goodnight all.
The shropshire have B 43... towards Wales and B 50.... towards Stoke. :-*
-
The number plate on the 1100 looks like (D)AO to me - Cumberland. Suffix is probably C which was 1965.
-
:D Nice one.. Tell me Cumberland is Cumbria? Lesanne.
-
Geoff,
I tend to agree with you it looks like "DAO 57C"
(We don't know for sure if it was a local car though I suppose - but we can perhaps
presume it was)
Lesanne - yes - Cumberland is Cumbria :)
Trystan
-
:) And how old does it look !!!
-
To get shadows like those in the photo, the sun in Skirlaugh would have to be shining from the NORTH.
-
Sorry folks,
It's seeding time on the farm and I'm the go-fer. I can just sneak little dashes to the computer in between trips to the field.
My mother's connections in Shropshire were Much Wenlock to Holdgate area.... and maybe Shrewsbury. So far for Cumberland, I have found ancestors in Drigg, Ravenglass and Cleator.
The street disappearing into the background looks like it could be curving left. The windmill looking thingy is a far off power pole (I think).
I'm feeling very guilty for all the trouble everyone is going to... but, I'm loving all the funnies being bantered around.
Warm regards, Donna
-
Could it be Wath Brow? about half mile from cleator
http://www.visitcumbria.com/wc/wathch.htm
Jim
-
Could it be Wath Brow?
the blow-up of the sign post (on the first page of this thread) shows a white house next to the church, which looks suspiciously like the white house in your arial shot, Jim, I think you've got it ;D
-
I think Jim's got it! ;D
Page down on link he's given and there's a handy aerial shot of the Church, the junction and the building to the left of the church - its as if someone tok that very photo with a view to solving Duckcharm's puzzle.
You're a star Jim - we can all RELAX now! ;)
-
So that will be the junction of the B5295 from Whitehaven and the A5086 to Egremont (which may have formerly been a B road?)
ADDENDUM: And the sign will say 'Cleator Moor': so all those who said they could see 'Moor' don;t need an eye test!
Okay ... okay ... time to move on!
But then again, I suppose Donna will find it useful to know the street and number of the house where the 'X' is!
-
If its right the sign post should read B5295 Ennerdale Rd.
I used to walk past it every day but that was 30 years ago :)
-
:D oooh, Well Done Jim... Hooray. Now I can go to work. :-\
and put all the maps away ;D Lesanne.
-
Jim,
How brilliant!
I've been following this thread and thinking that surely some brilliant RootsChatter would identify this dear little church.
Now that you have, I've Googled for Wath Brow and found lots (far too many!) of sporting references - but here's an inside view:
http://www.whiteheath.demon.co.uk/cso/reviews/review37.html
JAP
-
Praise be to Jim ;D Well of course it is...I can see the name and number quite clearly now. ;D That nights sleep did me the world of good. It's amazing what a night out with a sailor wearing odd socks can do for one ;)
Su ;D ;D ;D
-
Blimey! FIRE THE GUNS AND LET THE BELLS RING!
Paint me pink and call me TICKLED!
I've spent the winter clicking through Shropshire! (Saw some wonderful country.) No wonder this relative was lost! My Mom will be so surprised.
Thank you, thank you EVERYONE! ;D
Donna
and there's even a painting with the dreaded road sign
-
Nice one Jim
All reference points match eg: sign post with corner of 2nd house - chimney 2nd house above roof line of 1st house extention 2 and just in front of window in 1st house extention 1 (next to the church)
Regards
Ken
-
Whow you guys are amazing, no need to call in Miss Marple now.
-
Hurray solved.
Have just come in from night shift and now I will sleep soundly.
Well done Jim, and everyone else. Who would have thought that photo would have generated such interest.
Excellent work,
Sue
-
Does anyone have anymore mystery photos like this? This was fun ;D
-
;D ;D ;D
Fantastic effort - and I have to agree it was fun working it out.
Nell
-
I've really enjoyed following this thread. I didn't contribute because I had absolutely no idea ;D
Well done to all you clever Rootschatters ;)
Jan
-
I have realy enjoyed following , the Sherlock Holmes team.
Well Done!!
Now please bring my Pearsalls down from the Moon.
Pam
-
Came across this thread to late to contribute, but really enjoyed reading it. People here are amazing. ;D ;D ;) Jan
-
It really shows how co-operative working can get results - we had the same process with a photo posted by Keith Bateman, and in no time someone was able to say 'I walk past that every day'!
cheers
Paul
-
Didn't see this thread earlier (or I would have had my twopennorth about the cars) but have just read it from beginning to end! What great communal detective work! Well done all of you.
Jill
-
Wow - this is brilliant!!!
The painting by Lowry on the site mentioned: http://www.visitcumbria.com/wc/wathch.htm
- the signpost and the street light are in the same positions as in the photo!
-

Hi Trysan... Did you notice that the artist also couldn't make out what the sign said! ;D
Donna
-
Yes!!
Who'd have thought that Lowri might have given us a clue for us on RootsChat!
-
;D Who has a contact with a newspaper. ;)
This should go National or even Worldwide.
Scoop for them, fantastic advertizing for Rootschat ;D
Lesanne.
-
I know this is sorted but just to finalise it heres a photo taken today from roughly the same place, I only live 5 miles away, for everones information the road sign would have said: (left) Whitehaven 5 miles, (right) Ennerdale Bridge 3 miles
I wonder if the people hanging about are any relation to those in the original, I was considering telling the local rag but as its not my thread I won't
Congrats everyone I do wish I'd seen it sooner and saved all the time, but where would the fun have been I hope the pic works
-
My dear Andrew R!
Thank you so very much for posting your picture! It will really be a special delight for my mother, too!
I would be very curious if any relations of mine still live in the area. Methinks they came from PATTINSON stock and my line had a farm (High Croft or The Hill or Grundy Croft)) nearby the picture as well.
Please tell the 'local rag' if you have time. Oh, please let me/us know if you hear back. Oh boy, wouldn't it be something if family still lives there?!
Good grief! Excited I am! ;D
Wishing you well, Donna
-
Okey dokey... I've had a chance to settle down.
Andrew R:
The picture is just perfect! I've printed a glossy off of your posted photo... I hope that is okay. I wish I could make that same step in time... hopefully someday. Wow! I can see that the same ole power poles are there... but, maybe a new street light... plus, the street sign doesn't look nearly as menacing. :) [Dang though... we cannot make out a licence plate! Hee!]
Anyway... yes indeedy, wouldn't it be awesome if someone on the street in my original photo would say, "Hey! That's me! The year was 196? and we were just ... "?
Happy day to you, Donna
P.S. I forgot to ask others if I should ask permission from Trystan and Sarah regarding the "local rag".
-
Donna
It was no problem, however if you would like a really good quality photo or photos with car number plates on (ha ha) , please send me a e-mail address on the personal message thingy, and I'll send the high quality (over 300K) ones over, I can't in the group
Again it was no problem, I was interested to see the difference
Regards
Andrew
-
You are a darlin' Andrew R
I will send a PM soon (gotta turn the steaks on the BBQ). :)
I sent a PM to trystan... mez hope that it will be Okay to chat with local rags. ;D
Type to you soon, Donna
-
Another bonus for this thread!
It would be great for Rootschat's profile if this is picked up by the local press - and it may even interest the local TV as its a great piece of detective work!
cheers
Paul
-
Donna,
Yes indeed this is a brilliant topic showing what RootsChatters can do!
We have no problem at all in people contacting their local newspapers on any article that may be of local interest to them.
An easy way to do it is to get in contact with the newsdesk and speat to one of the reporters and explain whatever topic to them, and then ask them for their email address. (Explain that you will send them a link by email.) You can then use the "Send to a Friend" button to send them the topic. :)
Trystan
-
Thank you very much for your reply, Trystan!
I will leave the local newspaper's attention with Andrew R to scoop as he wishes. I hope this brings many great things for the site. :)
Everyone on Rootschat has my most sincere appreciation. I look forward to Winter... when I can spend much of my time with you all... both learning and helping.
Happy day,
Donna
-
Well
The Whitehaven News was interested and said that they also have a thing called "Cleator Moor" crack, whether something gets printed I don't know but the lady reporter seemed interested, I also asked if any of the readers could possibly shed any more light on the farms you mentioned
We will see, if you think about it local papers are probally a good source of information - The Whitehaven News quite often prints old photos asking if anyone knows any information and old stories some quite interesting.
They have a web site and if you hold on I'll post it and a few other local ones that have information on
Andrew
-
Heres the web sites
http://www.whitehaven.talktalk.net/ has section on genealogy
http://www.whitehaven-news.co.uk/ check out the "looking back section" three legged chickens ??? hmmm and this may be of use:
www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/brock.html
and I must tell people not to miss the forth maritime festival 26 to 28 Jun maybe even see me
Andrew
-
Thank you for the exciting update, Andrew. And, thank you for the links. I will be giving them a look-see over the weekend.
Wishing you well, Donna
-
Hi Donna,
Sometimes when you write a letter to the editor, they will place your letter in the paper for free. I have done this a few times and had great responses. One fellow was not a relation, but his neighbor had the same name I was looking for and cut out my letter to give to them.
Karen
(in the great white north too!)
-
Oh! Thank you Karen!
That's a dandy idea! Definitely something for me to consider when farming slows down. I'm trying to wean myself off of the computer so I might get some physical work done... haven't had much luck yet. :)
Glad to 'meet' a kindred Canuck spirit. :D
Donna
-
Hi again a little news
If you live in West Cumbria, by the Whitehaven News next week 'cos it may get printed, I don't know what it will say but, I was talking to one of the reporters today she phoned me up at work today and I went round with more details
Andrew
-
Great stuff Andrew!
Maybe someone can scan the article in and post it here? :)
Paul
-
Well, it only made the front page of the "Cleator Moor Crack"
I will scan it soon and post it here
Andrew
-
Excellent news! The 'Cleator Moor Crack' sounds like a wonderful name for a paper!
Incidentaly, can anyone elighten me as to why Southport has its 'Visiter' newspaper, rather than a 'Visitor'?
Paul
-
Fantastic News ;D ;D ;D
The newspaper runs some very good articles on local history.
Sarah :)
-
Hi folks
one pic I hope.
-
try again ................. can not see it yet !
-
Hopefully
-
Brilliant Andrew!!
What a nice job you did in promoting this GREAT site.
Keith
-
That was GREAT !! It was great to see a piccie too !
Sarah
-
Fantastic Andrew! Another boost for Rootschat!
Paul
-
Well done Andrew - great story and picture!
Jill
-
Hey it just took a few minutes to walk from work to the Whitehaven news office, I enjoyed it
Andrew
-
:D Good for you Andrew,
What a great ending !!... Lesanne. :D
-
Hi to you all,
This was a great thread to read and it got me thinking about what sort of people we (amateur genealogists) are and what makes us tick. Seems to me that the process of working out the location is the same as working out an unknown link in the family - use everything you've got, throw nothing away etc.
So, I then started wondering what sort of jobs we people do (or always wanted to do). When I was in my teens I wanted to be a pathologist/forensic scientist. When reality hit I went into electronics, then fixing TV's, videos etc. And now I write software for control systems. (Well, I can see the similarities anyway!)
What do you lot do then?
-
How great is that and smashing publicity for the site too. Well done!
Mary
-
This has been a remarkable experience for me.
Such fun and excitment!
Many thanks to all you wonderful Rootschatters out there.
Special thanks to Jim for solving the puzzle,
to Andrew for the new pictures and newspaper's attention,
and to Trystan & Sarah for creating this incredible site!
Wishing you well,
Donna
-
Good for you Andrew!! - shows you did some talking - to get it on the front page !!!! 8) 8) 8)
Mikehicks - you should start a new thread with your question .... though there may already be one going - check it out!! If you write software - maybe you could come up with some easy programs for Genealogists!!!!!! 8) 8) 8) - now there's a concept !!!!!!!
Annie
-
What a wonderful ending to this thread ;D
Some more well deserved publicity for Rootschat ;)
Jan
-
Hi,
why not send your photo to the Shrewsbury chronicle tel (01743 248248) , they publish old photos of the region every week, and ask the readers to gueese the location, If there is anobody living in Shropshire , that can identify your snap , they will let you know.
regards Pete.
-
A very late response, but to the question why is the Southport Visiter so named, rather than Visitor, is because at the time that it was first printed, "visiter" was an accepted alternative spelling for the word (the paper's main purpose was to list the visitors in town... many fashionable folk brought their eligible offspring to Southport for the season to find a good match, so knowing who was in town was important).
The paper kept it's outdated spelling.
-
Thanks for that, Candolim Imp.
cheers
Paul

Looking at Skirlaugh - there is a chapel today on a junction which has the B1243 in the right direction from it. Long long shot but maybe the church has lost it's steeple? And is now a chapel? [Red Arrow]
Pam
Or the road number maybe wrong ::)
Nice to know you found where the picture was from, and just for reference the church on the corner as stated in this thread is now being lived in and have a picture for your enjoyment
(http://www.skirlaugh-village.net/skirlaughgallery/misc/DVC00051.JPG)
I run the local Skirlaugh Website and found this site from google with this thread

:D Hello Bodster,
Welcome to Rootschat.
Nice to see a building still standing. With an extention in keeping too!!
Page 5 reply 73 has the bird eye view of the old chapel.
So to, this thread continues......

Hi
Could you help me on this one? We have come to a stand still. Can you find our Mystery hotel?
