Hi
I have my grt grandfathers birth cert and it shows he was born at Barns Court Terrace in the sub district of Hereford City in 1866. I am not from Hereford, can anyone please tell me what part of Hereford this is and anything about the area? Many Thanks Dawn

Hi and welcome to rootschat,
Barrs court terrace was in the immediate area where Barrs court railway station is now. The station was built in the 1860's, I will look at some books and see if I can find out more info.

hi,
have not found as much as I would like as the book I need is back in the library but
I can find no mention of barns court and think it must be Barrs court terrace.
In 1860 Barrs Court was a large house and country estate on the north-east
outskirts of the city, now completely consumed by the large railway complex
and new housing, but Barrs Court Road remains alongside the railway
In 1866 it was not within the city at all, as a map of 1861 shows this area as
mostly open country but the railway was being built directly alongside, and partly on,land belonging to Barrs Court House.
On the other side of the railway was the Hereford and Gloucester canal and canal wharves.
Barrs Court Rd can be seen on google maps and is on google street view.
Have you found your relative in the 1881 census as he may still be with his parents in the area.
regards and good luck

Thanks so much for your reply - checking the birth cert it could be Barrs Court. I cannot find James on the 1871 census but in the 1881 one he is living in Dudley close to the canal network so that could account for him moving around. I am off to look up the area on google.
Thanks again Dawn

Be aware that the Gloucester to Hereford canal terminated close to this location so could they be connected to the canal trade.....well worth research.
