I descend from a County Down Catholic called Edward Torrens, who married an Ann Murphy (c.1797-31 Dec 1857), before having sons John (1820/1-84), Edward (1823/4) and my ancestor William (1825/6-1904). I have no idea when Edward died, but the family moved over to the Isle of Man about 1842, then to Whitehaven around 1847. Ann Murphy had a brother Bernard (c.1803-62) who later moved over to Whitehaven: all I know about him is that his wife was Elizabeth(c.1824-64), and there was a daughter Elizabeth born in Ireland in about 1851.
Any connections?

Hello, Stephen
I too have Torrens/Torrance ancestors- Jane Torrens/Torrance who reputedly married a Samuel Frazer in Ulster, c1780. I have been unsuccessful yet in discovering more, but will let you know if I come across your family in the future.

If you havent seen the Torrens entries in http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/
you might be missing a few clues eg the civil parishes where the earliest lived, curiously I couldnt find any Torrance
good luck onwards

I have come across this site before. The Torrenses of Dundrum and Kilmegan are probably some connection to mine. I also had an ancestor called William Torrentine - probably from Ireland - but this name is even harder to research than Torrens/Torrance.

Hi,
A daughter of William Torrentine, Hannah, married Henry Montgomery in St Marks Church of Ireland, Newtownards, Co. Down on 22 Sept 1853.

The reason I mentioned that was because this entry is below Torrens on the above site index. My Torrentine had crossed the Irish Sea by 1784. Apart from some Torrentines/Turrentines in America, I think this name is now extinct.
