Hi,

There is a marriage for a Beatrice Ann Salkeld to a Frank Bolton in London, Ontario, Feb 1, 1924.    Here is the transcript.  The entries are organised by groom's name, so scroll down to Bolton.  Then age, place of birth, place of residence, parents, etc are listed.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/msex1924.htm

If you want to see the full marriage certificate, it will be on Ancestry.  If you have a subscription, or if your library has access to the free version, you will be able to view it.

ADDED - I just took a peek at the original on A## and I see that the groom's birthplace is really Brownsville Ontario, not Bowmanville Ontario.  The transcribers on the free site have made an error.

On a side note, it looks as if she would have helped to look after this fellow in 1922:

Their marriage certificate says that they intended to live in London, Ontario.  Here is a link to the London Library.

http://www.londonpubliclibrary.ca/genealogy

The Middlesex Co OGS:

http://londonmiddlesex.ogs.on.ca/
(some useful links at the bottom of the page - under the enormous map)

Canada's privacy laws are pretty strict, so you won't find any birth records for this couple - 1924 is too recent.  Your best bet would be to find a newspaper announcement for any births (the main paper would be the London Free Press).  The above links might help you find cemetery information/city directories etc.   The Directories would be very useful - to see if they continued to live in the London area.

I know the Toronto Public Library has some City Directories for London Ontario.  If you have no luck with your search, let me know and I can check next time I am at the downtown Toronto Reference Library (in a few weeks).

Hello ladym,

As RK says, the London Free Press is the main local newspaper and you may want to contact them or the public library who has  archived the Free Press for local notices and announcements in the paper. You may want to try some of the surround town newspapers as well such as Strathroy, Lucan, and St Thomas although they are in surrounding counties. The public library does have the city directories there as well. I believe one of the librarians there deals with genealogy, so I would ask for this person. I believe the info you are looking for would be at the central branch.

The Weldon Library archive at the University of Western Ontario may have info there as well. The university has 3 church based colleges (United, Anglican and anorther which I don't recall at the moment) on campus each with thier own libraries  you may want to query as well.

I found the marriage reg for Beatrice Ann Salkeld. This is the info I found:
Birth Place: Dorset England, Age: 21, Estimated Birth Year: abt 1903
Parent's  Names: Thomas Salkeld & Sarah Davis
Spouse Name: Frank Bolton, Age: 34, Birth Place: Brownsville Ont
Parent's  Names: James Bolton  & Hannah Robinson
Marriage Date: 1 Feb 1924 & Location: Middlesex Co
Registration district: Middlesex, Archives of Ontario Microfilm: MS932_683

I found a family tree on ancestry for Frank Bolton, bn in 1888, and living in Dereham, Norfolk, Ontario (near London).  His parents are James Bolton and Hanna Matilda Robinson which ia good match to the marriage info. .There is not any wife shown for Frank in the tree, but your Beatrice fits the timing and location :-)

Hope this helps,

JDC

Hi again,

Forgot to mention that Brownsville is in Dereham Twp near Tillsonburg, Ontario. Tillsopnburg is on the county lines of Norfolk, Oxford and Elgin Counties.

Hi there,

Just a few things to add to all the great information that JDC found...

The familysearch site also has the Ontario Deaths records:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0d66/

It looks as if Frank's death was mentioned in the Dutton Advance newspaper.

http://www.elginogs.ca/Home/ancestor-indexes/newspapers/dutton-advance/da-1930---1934

I think the accident that caused his death would merit mention in the London Free Press too.  It might be worth seeing if someone could look this up for you.

If you want to see Frank's actual death certificate, JDC has given you the information you need to get the microfilm from the Ontario Archives.   Ancestry has these images in their database too.  if you have a subscription, or if your local library has the free Ancestry Library Edition (mine does :)), you will be able to see it.

It looks like Frank was buried in the Ebenezer cemetery.  I don't see a cemetery by this name in Elgin County (where Frank died), or in Middlesex County (London area - where they lived).  There is an Ebenezer Grove cemetery in Derehem, Oxford County.   This seems like a possibility because he is from that area.

Archives of Ontario Cemetery Records - film numbers
http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/archival-records/interloan/cemetery-oxford.aspx
Just scroll down to Derehem Township

A local library should have printed copies:
London Library - see link in a previous post
http://www.ocl.net/genealogy/

Then, there is the Ontario Genealogical Society.  They will do lookups for a fee.
http://www.ogs.on.ca/branches/branchlocator.php
Check Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford Counties.  There are lots of good links on the OGS sites.

Beatrice was very young when Frank died, so she may have married again.

JDC found a record for a trip to England in 1927.  Here is a free image of the passenger list for the return voyage:

Hello ladym,

I did a quick check for a 2nd marriage for Beatrice on Ancestry and didn't see one, as RK says, Frank was young when he  passed away.  I will take a longer look when i get a chance in the next coupla days. Dutton s not far from London either, but in ELgin Co I believe.

As for getting the records from the Ontario Archives, they do inter-library loans for some films. Perhaps you can contact you local public library to dod this for you. Check with them while your doing that to see if they have the library version of Ancestry access if you don't have it yourself. The you can go there and get the ancestry document images yourself :-) I am assuming you are not living in the Toronto or London areas to have easy access to getting these dox. If that is indeed the case you may want to use an RAOGK volunteer to get this info for you. Their website is: http://www.raogk.org/ontario.htm. I have used them in the past and found them very helpful.

You mention finding living rellies. I would suggest that you use www.canada411.com to look up the name in the locations you think the children possiblely reside once their names found. Bolton is a common name so a location will need to be narrowed down :-)

Chers for now, JDC

Hi,

I went to the Toronto Reference Library and had a look in the London directories and I think I found Beatrice and Frank.  Sometimes the work address is given and sometimes the home address - so I think I have interpreted this correctly -

1925 - Frank Bolton is a stoker at Ontario Hosp
1926 - Beatrice I is a clerk at FW Woolworth, 8 Perry Street (I wonder if this is her - there are no other Beatrice Boltons in the directory, but if she was a homemaker, she wouldn't be listed separately.)  Frank Bolton is a labourer with an address of 417 Bathurst.  (This may be a work address)
1927 - Beatrice Bolton is a cook at Victoria Hospital.  Frank is a cooper.  For both, a home address is given - 251 1/2 Wellington street.   This would have to be your Beatrice and Frank.
1928 and 1929, neither of them is in the directory.
1930 - Frank works at Lon and Pet Barrel company.  This would make sense if he was a cooper.  I expect the short forms stand for London and Peterborough - or something like that.   ???
1931 - directory is too delicate to handle, so I didn't look at it.
1932 - Frank is still at the Lon and Pet Barrel Company.  There is a Beatrice Bolton who is a saleslady at the Red and White store, 8 Perry Street.  (this would be the Woolworth store mentioned above).  I don't know if she is your Beatrice or not.

1932 - Frank dies

1933 - Beatrice Bolton (wid Frank) works at McCormicks, address 365 Ontario Street (I think this is her home address).   There is another Beatrice Bolton who is a clerk at DH Wright at 7 Perry street.  This is the only year when there are 2 Beatrice Boltons listed in the directory.  The Perry street work address makes me wonder if the Woolworth/Red and White Store Beatrice is this second one??

This is really odd
1934-1937 there is only one Beatrice Bolton in the directory and she works at McCormicks as above.  She is listed as (wid George) in all of these.   There is no George Bolton in any of the earlier censuses who could have been her husband.  I think I saw one or two, but they had their wives' names in brackets next to their own names - no Beatrice.   Did Frank have a middle name or did he use the name George or is this just an error that never got corrected?  Odd ???

1938 and on - no Beatrice.  Perhaps she married again or moved elsewhere.  If you are looking for a second marriage you might want to look at 1938/1939/1940.

I know this is a bit confusing, but at least it gives you some information that might be helpful if you were to contact the London Library.

Hi all,

They do have the directories at the London Public Library - Central Branch. You may want to have a look at the Scott's or Moodies' Ontario Business directories as well to get info on those businesses. McCormack's is located on Dundas St East ( not far from Ontario St - about 5-6 blocks). The other businesses should be listed there as well. All of the streets you mention would not have been far from where the pair worked in London - mostly walking distance.

As for the remarriage, the regs should be available soon, but till then I would check the London Free Press for announcements.

Good going on the work RK.

cheers, JDC
