Is there someone who can look up a baptism record in Banbury for me, please? It's for Sarah Cowper (http://pellscocks.familyandlocalhistory.com/getperson.php?personID=I66&tree=Main-Feb-2009), born approx 1814.
After some struggles with the 1841 census, and doing some checking with marriage records I think there may have been two Sarah Cowpers baptised in Banbury about that time. Hopefully one will be listed as Sarah Anne (not mine) and the other as plain old Sarah.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Hi Mark
Do you have any other info. I had a look at the Banbury PR's today at the library and couldn't find Sarah. There were different registers for Banbury but no evidence of Cowpers at all. Is there any other way the name could have been spelt?

Thanks for looking. Cooper is always a possible alternative.
According to the 1851, 1871 and 1881 censuses she was born 1813-1814. The 1861 census would have her at 1822, however. I've always assumed the later date is an error. The 1841 census has a Sarah Cowper born approx 1811 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, so that fits with the earlier date, and her second marriage was in 1845, so that too fits the early date hypothesis.
But I've also noticed a Sarah Cowper born approx 1826 in the parish of Aston Le Walls, Northamptonshire, but still in the registration district of Banbury. That's a very long shot given everything I've said, but I might have to try it if we don't come up with anything in Banbury proper.
FreeBMD has the marriage of a Sarah Anne Cowper in Banbury in 1847, but she can't be mine. So it does look as there might be two Sarah Cowpers born around that time. Funny we can't find either of them!

Will have another look when I'm next there, see if I can find anything. I notice on the 1841 she is living in Cropredy, persumably with her sisters so I can check if there is anything there.

Thanks very much.

Had another go today but no luck I'm afraid so far.
There were no baptisms in Cropredy, it was a wild guess but thought I would try based on the 1841 census.
There were no christening PR's for period around 1814 that I could find though I did check registers for Presbytarian and Wenslyan churches at this time but no luck.
Will give it another go next time I have a bit of time and also look for Coopers

Hi Mark
I don't know if you still want this, but I found Sarahs two sisters Emma & Fanny in 1851 giving their place of birth as Horley, so from the registers of Horley (OFHS)
1810 Jan 1 Sarah d/o Richard & Sarah COWPER
they also had
1805 Mary Ann
1807 William
1808 Ann
1811 Charlotte
1813 Charles
1815 Fanny
1817 Emma
on the last 3 records Richard is gven as a farmer of the village

and 3 burials from the same source
1822 Dec 3 Sarah Cowper aged 47
1838 Nov 27 Richard Cowper aged 62
1839 Charles Cowper aged 25

Ok - forget that lot, I think you have the wrong Sarah in 1841, I have just found her with 2 others of her sisters still unmarried and visiting in Banbury in 1851 so that one can't be yours.
I looked at the transcripts for Banbury and although there are no COWPER baptims at that time there are 2 COWPER marriages,
1840 Thomas Webb fa whitesmith s/o Henry
to
Anne Cowper fa d/o Richard - butcher
and 1849 John Webb s/o Henry
to
Elizabeth Cowper aged 28 d/o Richard - butcher
from the age on Elizabeth's I found a baptism 1820 Elizabeth d/o Richard & Mary COOPER of Oxford Bar Banbury, butcher
they also had Ann in 1816
Georgina in 1808
SARAH in 1805 (Sept 9)
Edmund in 1802
the surname in each case is given as COOPER but 2 of the daughters used COWPER when marrying, the occupation for Richard is right but Sarah's birth is a bit earlier than you were expecting, what do you thank?

Debbie,
Thanks for trying! I've found 'my' Sarah Cowper on the 1851 through 1881 census (by which time she is Sarah Mabbs). You can see all the details here (http://pellscocks.familyandlocalhistory.com/getperson.php?personID=I66&tree=Main-Feb-2009), if you like.
Based on those censuses, it's possible that in 1841 she might be one of:
Sarah Tee (b. approx 1816), at Church Street Rectory House, Hackney
Sarah Cowper (b. approx 1811 in Oxfordshire) at Wardington, Lower End, Cropredy, Wardington, Oxfordshire (ruled out by your 1851 find)
Sarah Cowper (b. approx 1811) at Ludgate Street, St Martin Ludgate, London
So here's my theory: The family you've found of Elizabeth Cowper is the right family, but the 1805 Sarah died, and Richard and Mary had another Sarah in another parish sometime between 1808 and 1816. There is some evidence for this: Ancestry lists in its Banbury parish records the death of Sarah Cooper, daughter of Richard, butcher on 26 October 1809 (unfortunately it doesn't list baptisms for the same period).
So thanks for your work - at least I have a reasonable theory to test in the records.

Glad you think it is the right family Steve (at least we've eliminated the other one)
you may have seen this but Richard Cowper (the butcher) is still alive with his wife Mary in 1851, which is good cos it gives you his birth place (not Banbury)
Banbury
Richard Cowper 72 butcher born Sandford Oxford
Mary Cowper 73 born Banbury
HO107-1734 Fo381 Pg8
He died in 1857 aged 80
