Title: The good shepherd convent- Glasgow
Post by: Duffy11 on Sunday 08 May 11 23:34 BST (UK)
Hi,

Am wondering if anyone has information regarding the Good Shepherd convent on London road in Glasgow? I have my fathers adoption papers and his mother aparently was a laundry worker there and I'm trying to piece together a few information to make progress.

Hope anyone can be of help.

Thanks,

Lillias

Hi Sancti,

that was my old post, didn't realise i still had it there- i'm not very good with this rootschat thing! Still searching and still not really gotten much out of this so far.. :( I didn't realise it would be so hard!!

There is one thing that might mean something which is shorthand but I do not know anyone who can read shorthand as most have said they don't know how to read it. Argh!

Hi Lil

Hope you are well  :) Pity things are still hard to unravel...

Regarding the shorthand you have. You might want to consider attaching it as an image (not sure if this is pages and pages or just a short section?) to the help board here: Deciphering & Recognition Help www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,425.0.html  I never ceased to be amazed by the wealth of knowledge on that board!

Hi Lil,

Sorry your still hitting a brick wall regards this. Adoption is always a hard thing to get information about due to the legal nature of it. That and the fact that the Catholic Church are very strict on who they share this information with if it still exists.
Did you contact Andrew Nicol at the Scottish Catholic Archives in Edinburgh?
http://www.scottishcatholicarchives.org.uk/

Regards the shorthand, it would also depend on what format its been taken down as there are several different types, I only know this as my good lady used to do it but its a thing of the past now. Not sure how much she remembers but as Monica says well worth trying posting a bit n here to see.

We all love a challenge :)

Hello.  I know this post has been here for a while, but I am curious to know if you found anything?  My gran was there also when my mother was born.  My mother was then given (no.formal adoption) to a family.  I have traced my birth Gran but unfortunately she has passes on before tracing the family

What further information are you looking for if you have traced your birth gran?

I suppose just some background.
I can't find any official info about the place in this era, and nothing about it being a mother and baby home...
No one knows, including her twin sister, what happened to my gran between 1949 and 1961, only that she put here as her address when she gave birth to my mum.
Just trying to put the pieces together.  Could she stay here without being pregnant, did she fall pregnant after moving in there or did she move there because she was pregnant?
We are still trying to trace my mothers paternal side, so we are hoping by putting together some of my grandmothers background, it may lead to some clues/evidence to Mr x.
What was it like to live there?  Would they have been good to her.  It sounds like they may have been, but given the stories from other places, was she forced to give my mother up?  Etc., etc...  Just anything really.

Thank you so much for the reply.  I had read this already.  Very informative, however I'm interested in the era after the children's home left the building.  Specifically 1950-1.
What "organisation" took over?  All I can find is a reference to it being a working laundry, but nothing about pregnant women boarding there.
