Hi On the 1851 census for Shrewsbury my husbands Gt Gt Grandfather John Roberts says he was an Innkeeper. They lived at 42 Abbey Foregate, is there anyway I can find out which Inn it was? Regards

The 1851 directory for Shropshire (courtesy historicaldirectories.org) doesn't show a John Roberts, but then the directory would have been compiled the year before?
Inns, Hotels & Taverns in Abbey Foregate are:
Angel, William Mansell
Barley Mow, Joseph Jones
Bricklayer's Arms, Joseph Watson
Bull, Edward Edwards
Crow, John Lott
Dun Cow, Ann Morris
Old Bell, Mary Stanway
Old Bush, John Dixon
Old Thrasher, Jas. Richard Pickering
Park Inn, William Parker
Waterloo House, Richard Williams
And Beerhouses:
Francis B. Lewis
William Price
Seems like a lively street!!

Many thanks for the quick reply. Shame he wasn't listed but his main job according to Census records have him down as printer, compositor and it was only on his sons birth certificate that he was listed as Innkeeper!!

Hi just been g**gling your information and found this for 1828, would this be too early for your John ?

Hi Claire
Thankyou so much for looking, it's not the John Roberts I'm looking for as he was born 1823 but I feel there has to be a connection.
I have found a number of Roberts in the town, from the Directory for Shropshire in 1851 trading. What I don't understand is John says on all census records that he was a compositor but there was no Roberts in that line of work.
I found a Thomas Roberts in the Plough, Abbey Foregate
Mary Roberts possibly John's mother as a Baker
David Roberts Hop & Seed Merchant
Henry Hosier
Charles Shoe boot maker
Edward ditto
John ditto
Hannah Butcher
David Clothes Dealer
William Fruiterers
Joseph Furniture Broker
Edward Provisions, Sundries & Groceries
Henry ditto
Edward Draper
Edward Tailor & Woollen Drapers
Evan Veterinary Surgeon
What I would love to do is tie these together as an extended family.
As I said above Mary Roberts could have been John's mother.
His fathers name was William from the 1841 census
Edward a brother born 1816
and Ann his sister born 1821
Shame the census at that time doesn't say the profession!!
Kind Regards
Pat
