We are trying to find any record of the marriage of Edward McNulty and Bedelia Margaret McNulty about 1850.
Their death certificates in New Zealand are contradictory - one says they were married in Leeds (about 1850) and the other says Manchester (without a date specified).
We have tried searching on Free BMD but the closest we could find was an Edward McNulty and Bridget McNulty marrying in Leeds in 1851.
We have also thought of census records, but we are unsure if they were in the UK in 1851 (marriage is "about 1850") or 1861 (we know they were in New Zealand in 1865 but we don't know when they left the UK, although we understand a son Edward Joseph was born in Manchester in 1857 (we can't any record of this either)). Both Edward senior and Bedelia were born in Ireland.
Having tracked our ancestors back in New Zealand, this is our first attempt at tracing them back to the UK, so apologies if we've missed something obvious.
We're not really sure what to try next and any suggestions would be appreciated.

FreeBMD has the following, which may be of interest:
June qtr 1851
Leeds Vol 23, Page 518
McNulty, Edward
McNulty, Bridget
Also:
Greenwood, Jane
Holdforth, Theresa
Whitaker, Rachel are on the same page.
Are you sure that Bedelia's maiden name was McNulty?
Also, a birth:
December qtr 1857
Stockport district Vol 8a, page 49
McNalty, Edward

KGarrad - thanks for the reply. I'll follow that information up.
As far as we can tell, Bedelia's maiden name was McNulty. Her death certificate was filled out in full - which is unlike a number of our ancestors. It shows her maiden name as McNulty (in fact it is very specific - it says "Bedelia Margaret McNulty formerly McNulty" and it also shows her parents names - with their surname being McNulty.

If you have either Edward's or Bedelia's parents names, can you tell us, please?
It would help the search!
Meanwhile, the 1851 census has this in Leeds:
Reference HO107, 3219, 398, 3
10 Brook Street, Leeds
McNulty, John Head Widower M 53 Hawker of Small Ware b Ireland
McNulty, Hugh Son M 20 Flax Dresser b Ireland
McNulty, James Son M 16 Flax Dresser b Leeds
McNulty, Michal Son M 14 Flax Dresser b Leeds
McNulty, Marla Daughter F 12 House Spinner b Leeds
McNulty, Margaret Daughter F 9 Scholar b Leeds
McNulty, Alice Daughter D 2 b Leeds
McNulty, Edward Son Widower M 29 House Dresser b Ireland
McNulty, James Grandson M 5 b Leeds
Does this family fit with what you know?

Yorkshire BMD has this marriage so these people did marry each other.
You would imagine though that there would be children earlier than 1857 then.

Kgarrad and heywood, thank you both very much for this information.
Most of this definitely makes sense.
We have no information on Edward's parents (other than he was born in Ireland (no location known), so presumably his parents were also in Ireland). The only information we have on Bedelia's parents is based on her New Zealand death certificate:
Bedelia Margaret McNulty (born Roscommon about 1830):
- father Edward John McNulty (occupation Land Surveyor)
- mother Margaret McNulty (nee Green)
We know that Edward had 3 children (2 definitely with Bedelia - the first one we thought might have been with a different wife as James' was born about 5 years before Edward and Bedelia got married, so this fits exactly with the census information above).
- James, born in England (no location known) about 1846.
- John Thomas (known as Thomas), born in Yorkshire, about 1854.
- Edward Joseph, born in Manchester, about 1857.
Based on what I've learnt recently, I did a search on Free BMD and have found:
- a James McNulty born in Leeds in 1846.
- a Thomas McNulty born in Leeds in 1853.
All very exciting information. I guess I need to order some certificates now.
Any other suggestions regarding the marriage or other places to look are appreciated.
Thanks again for your help.

But we know his father's name was John from the 1851 census?
I also think that "Marla" was actually Mary - found the following births that seem to fit:
September qtr 1838
Leeds vol 23, page 314
McNulty, Mary
September qtr 1841
Leeds vol 23, page 387
McNulty, Margaret
June qtr 1848
Leeds vol 23, page 505
MacNulty, Alice

Yorkshire BMD has:
marriage for Edward McNulty and Sarah Howarth -1843 Leeds registered Building (presumably in a Catholic church?)
birth James McNulty 1846 Leeds North
death -1849 Sarah McNulty Leeds Southeast
There is of course nothing to indicate that these connect and as you can see the birth and death are in different sub-districts.
You really would need the marriage certificate of Edward and Bridget and the birth certificate of James to establish the connection.

Do you know from the records you accessed if the mothers name is listed as she is missing from the 1851 census records
Graeme
(another McNulty)

John McNulty, the father, born 1798, was listed as a widower in 1851.
