Good evening,
I am trying to get some additional information as well as confirmation of what I have for one of my family lines.
John Formby
birth-
either 1796 [1851 England Census - Ince Blundell] in Burscough
or 1810 [1861 England Census - Ince Blundell] in Burcough
or 1802 [1871 England Census - Liverpool] in Ormskirk
married to Jane Fairclough - March 1848 [BMD volume XX page 736]
birth
abt 1828 Latham [1851, 1861, 1871 all seem to agree]
children were;
John, Richard, Alice (my GGM), Mary, Ann, Margaret, Jane
Can anyone help me confirm that this is correct and perhaps help me push back another generation?
Thank you!

Do you have a copy of the 1848 marriage cert showing his fathers name?

1841 has a John Formby aged 35-9 in Ince Blundell as a Blacksmith (same occupation as 1851). HO107/518/4 FOL7 P8.
Ellen Tristram (45-9) is a Female Servant in the same house.
Ann Lovelady is next door in both censuses, so it's probably the same chap.
Another possible age for John, I'm afraid.

If he was in Ince Blundell the family were more than likely Catholics.
His marriage according to www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk was at Holy Family RC Ince Blundell.
Their marriage certificate will give both parties father's names. If they are both from Ince Blundell they were probably baptised at the church there.
I would suggest you need to be looking at baptisms at St John RC Church Burscough. These are not on line as far as I know but are on film at Lancashire Record Office Preston.
For the marriage and children's baptism you need Holy Family registers. These are on film at Crosby Library.

Hello,
I repy back to give more information re:JOHN FORMBY of BURSCOUGH.
I am able to give information about John and his family, as I am a newcomer to Roots I will check if you have received this message before I go any further.
Thanks, and please reply if you are still interested.)

There is a country mansion at Ince Blundell. If you look on Google Earth it is just alongside the A565 road between Crosby and the town of Formby.
Burscough is about 8 or 9 miles away.
I suggest that you do an internet search for Ince Blundell Hall
I am guessing that the BURSCOUGH registration district covered a wide area which probably ran along the Irish sea coast between Hightown and Southport and then inland to the small town of Burscough.
It maybe that your John Formby worked for the land owner of the Ince Blundell Hall and Estate.
Can anyone else please confirm the size of the Burscough registration district?
-
PS.. If you live in Lancashire now, I suggest that you visit Ince Blundell and have a look at the old headstones in the cemetery. You may find your John Formby. But you are only about 3 to 4 miles from the town of Formby, so it may be a common name in that village.
-
I also suggest that you amend the thread title to include INCE BLUNDELL
I am sorry, but some of my guesses about the "Burscough" reg district may possibly be wrong in the above reply.
It is more likely that ORMSKIRK was the registration district.

I have been researching the Sumner family (of which I am descended) in the Formby, Burscough, Halsall, Lathom and Ormskirk regions and have come across the Formby family a couple of times.
I managed to find some Formby names emigrating to Australia (all to Adelaide)
• William Harper Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Alice Brooks” in 1839
• William Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Davidsons” in 1843
• John Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Constitution” in 1851
• Thomas Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Constitution” in 1851
I add the above just in case this is not an avenue you have yet explored; Thomas Richard Sumner (and wife Janet, nee Crook and dau Mary Jane) and Henry, his younger brother (and my direct line) stayed with a John Formby when they first arrived in South Australia during the Gold rush. John Formby was to become a very well known and respected South Australian in shipping, politics and law.
This John was the John Formby with which the Sumners stayed not long after their arrival in 1852.
I hope this may be of some use to you

Thank you very much for the information, my mother's maiden name was Formby and all my ancestors apart from a few stayed in Formby...................I will try and research your given info and see what transpires.
I do know several Formby's emigrated but I will try and check the names you have given.

Hello
Do you have family details from John & Jane's 1846 marriage, please? These are my (soon-to-be) ancestors.
Thanks,
Geoffrey :)
-
PS: What I meant was my soon-to-be Son-in-law's ancestors! I think their fathers were both called John.

If I'm right both John Formbys were blacksmiths: is that shown on the certificate? Any address given?
Is there anything about Jane's father: I think she came from Lathom.
Best wishes,
Geoffrey.
