1920 USA Census shows Harriet as widowed.

I could only find 1930 on Family Search and she is widowed on that.

In 1911 she is alone but 'married' - cannot find Alfred or his death and she 'married' on the ship manifest.

I thought he may have gone on ahead to USA but no record of him that I can find.

He must have vaporised!

edit: found the 1920

Hello Parmesan,

On the Passenger List for 23 July 1913 it says Harriet and the children were going to her sister Mrs Evans. Ivanhoe Street. Woodford Sta. Portland. Maine.

Harriet Musson Penlington appears in Naturalization Record Indexes - Date of Action was  5th October 1925 Maine.

The Maine Death Index shows:- Harriet E Penlington. Aged 98 years. Died 23 April 1963 Scarborough. Maine.  - Certificate: 6304976

The sister Martha Musson Evans also shows on Naturalization Records Indexes - Date of Action 14 February 1923 Maine. Residing at 45 West Kidder Street. Portland. Maine. Shows again admitted - 1 st March 1926

1920 shows Martha and her husband John  Evans living in Portland Ward 9, Cumberland, Maine

John Evans 59 Born England. Immigrated 1903.  PA. Round Houseman. Steam Railroad.
Martha Evans 55 Born England. Father Scotland and Mother England. Immigrated 1903. PA
Kathleen Mccloud 7 Grand-Daughter Born New Hampshire.

Alfred Frank Penlington shows in Natuarlization Indexes - Date of Action 18 February 1921. Residing 45 Galvin Street. Portland. Maine.

At a quick glance it looks as if they were the children of Captain William Musson and Martha

Alfred shows on 2 marriage entries for the same date - 7 Dec 1935 to Winnifred L Nelder in Wiscasset. Maine and 7 December 1935 to Winnifred L Paulin.  Cannot see a death record for Alfred but there is one for Winnifred.

Winnifred L. Penlington. Born 22 May 1908 and died 7 th September 2001
Last Residence: 04578  Wiscasset, Lincoln, Maine,
SSN issued: Maine (Before 1951)

Sorry could'nt see Alfred Penlington Snr.

Wow Sandra!

Thank you so much for all this information!  :-*

I am beginning to think Alfred Snr did not make the move with them but I cannot find a death record for him, which should be easy to do from the UK GRO lists. I cannot find him on the 1911 census either but I will keep looking. I am wondering also if Harriet's statements of 'married' and 'widowed' on ships manifest and census returns are statements of fact or propriety, if the former it gives me clues to when Alfred died.

I will see if I can find any of this info you have given me on Family Search where I did find a couple of USA census records.

Many thanks once again for looking up the information for me, much appreciated  :)

Hi Parmesan.

Your very welcome.  Tried to track Martha/Ellen to see if Alfred appeared anywhere but nothing so far. It looked as if the sister Martha and John Evans were in Nova Scotia in 1891, peculiar thing - it said married for John Evans and Cohabiting for Martha Evans and I've never seen that before.

Kings Kentville Nova Scotia.

John Evans 30 Labourer.
Martha Evans 28 Washer Woman
Frank Evans 10 months. Born England
Annie Allison 35 Domestic

The family then appear on a Boston Passenger List

Mrs John Evans aged 33 years, Frank 6 years, Beatrice 4 years, Mabel 2 years -  Port of Departure: Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Boston Massachusetts arriving 28 August 1895 on the SS Boston. Last residence was Nova Scotia.

Before returning to the Uk on Incoming Passenger List from Boston to Liverpool on Scythia arriving 10 September 1895.
John Evans 32 (shipper)  Ellen 27, Frank 5, Beatrice 3, Mabel 1 yr 6 mths.

1901 in St Peters Parish. Congleton.

John Evans 39 Born England. Sexton Church Off.
Ellen Evans 39 Born England
Frank Evans 11 Born Stafford
Beatrice Evans 9 Born Nova Scotia
Mabel Evans 7 Born Nova Scotia
Ethel Evans 4 Born Congleton. Cheshire.

1910 finds them in Portland Ward 9. Cumberland. Maine (slighlty mistranscribed)  but without John Evans. Would indicate a marriage around 1888

Ellen Wans 44 Marriage 1 for 22 years. Had 5 children and 4 survive.
Frank Wans 21 . Fireman on Railroad.
Mabel Wans 17
Ethel Wans 13
Abbert Furner 28 Boarder
Harry Danforth 18 Boarder
John Carr 75 Boarder

Hi again and thanks for all this extra info.

Looking at 1871 census for the Mussons, they are living in Cheshire and it says Harriet was born in Wolverhampton (and Martha Ellen in Birmingham) but on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses it says she is born in Chester, Cheshire!  I can only assume her parents knew where she was born but as a youngster growing up in Cheshire she assumed she was born there!

I have now seen the incoming passenger list for the Evans trip to England.

Can't find a marriage for John and Martha so that fits with your 'cohabiting'  info.

Just trying to check out Martha/Ellen - seemed to change her name around - the marriage of daughter Ethel states John and Martha Ellen though.

Ethel Evans to Clyde Loring Renard -  Married 27th September 1916 by Phillip Schuyler- Clerk - Born Portland. Maine.
Ethel Evans - Waitress - Born Congleton. England. Father John Evans. Born Little Drayton. England. Gardener. Mother Martha Ellen Musson born Birmingham.

Just found the family returning to Boston in 1905 on SS Cymric. John, Ellen, Frank, Beatrice, Mabel and Ethel. Its a little jumbled but looks as if they are going to Mrs J H Harding. 31 Rockland Street. Natick. Massachusetts. Looks like returning to home - sister-in-law of John, sister of Ellen, Aunt of the children  ???  Also underneath is Robert Davies aged 28 years, single, going to brother-in-law and also John Evans. 31 Rutland Street. Natick.  (Now theres another puzzle - who on earth is that   ???)

Mary Elizabeth her sister married a Meredith so thats one to discount.  ???
Brother William married Caroline Margaret Clowes.
Martha Ellen married or cohabited with John Evans
Harriet married Alfred Penlington

that leaves Emma born in 1877 and Eliza Ann 1860 - copuld be husbands initials that were quoted  ???

Wonder if there is an Obituary for Harriet ? There is a RAOGK volunteer in Cumberland County who will do Obituary look ups (first on the list for Cumberland County) on the link below. Perhaps that may give further information   ???

No problem.  Have'nt managed to locate J H Harding yet so no further progress down that avenue. Perhaps the Obituary for Harriet will help further with Alfred Penlington Jnr.

All The Best

Funny, there is a Robert Davies aged 23 living with Harriet and Alfred Penlington in 1901 - wonder who he is?  He is just noted as a 'Boarder'

Hi Parmesan,

No luck today on Harding in Massachusetts. See there was a marriage for a Emma Musson in Birkenhead. Cheshire 1901 but did'nt show who to !!  She would have been the right sort of age for Robert Davies whereas Eliza Ann was alot older.  Something might turn up on them yet.

Still nibbling away - If Frank Evans was born in Stafford, had hoped to find a passenger list for them going to Nova - Scotia but nothing showing yet.

Marriage Record for Frank Evans show parents John and Martha L

Frank Evans. Born about 1889. Aged 26 years. Father John Mother Martha L
Spouse: Priscilla Isabella Wells. Aged 22 years. Father William and Mother Nellie
Marriage Date: 22 Sep 1915 Portland  - Registration Place: Portland, Cumberland.

The 1920 Census for Frank and Priscilla says Frank immigrated 1890. The WW1 Draft shows a birth date of 13 th June 1889 which fits with a West Bromwich birth record June 1889 - 6b 789. Has'nt helped finding a marriage for John Evans and Martha though.  ???

Hello

Just seen your post and amongst your names is William married Caroline Margaret Clowes.
They are my Great Grand parents, lived in Chester, William Musson was a canal boatman worked for the Shropshire Union Canel Company, they are both buried in Chester.
I recall my Father John William Musson spoke of an Aunt Emma who lived in Massachusetts,
I believe she made a visit to England possibly in the 1960 and stayed with family in Wolverhampton.

The Musson family feature often in the Wolverhampton area, all worked mainly on the canals. My Grand Father John William Musson Snr was the last to work the canals, his final job being top lock keeper where the Manchester Ship Canal met the Shropshire union, he died in 1943.

I would be interested to learn of any information on Emma as she could be my Great Aunt.

Kindest regards

John Musson
