Title: Cooper Family of Bedfordshire
Post by: sarlush on Sunday 01 May 11 11:38 BST (UK)
Hi.

I have been doing family tree research through ancestry.com.au but have hit a brick wall (well several actually!) and hoping someone on here can help me get past these walls!

I'm looking at the Cooper family who were from Bedfordshire England. I have gone back to John Cooper (Alias Farrer) who was born about 1632 and died 1684 in Bedfordshire.  He was married to an Elizabeth and had 3 children i know of - Mary 1654, John 1655 and Thomas 1658. John Cooper owned what is now called the Half Moon Pub and then passed it to Thomas (who is my direct ancester). I am trying to find John Cooper (Alias Farrer) exact year of birth and his parents. Not sure when he started to go by the name Farrer or if it was an alias for his first name or surname. If anyone has any more information that can help me i'd appreciate it!

Thanks

Sarah

Thanks John i will go and check that out. I hadn't seen that one yet.

It's the Half Moon Pub in Kempston. That his son Thomas 1658 owned.

The Half Moon Kempston, Bedfordshire, has a website.  Try logging onto it.  The Licensees are very nice & will help you with its history.

My sons know the pub well!!!!!!

I've been to the website, it had some info which proved helpful!

I hope to one day go to England and visit the pub! It'd be awesome to walk in the steps of my ancestors!

You should have a look at Merv Wharton's family tree on Genes Reunited.
He has over 25000 names including Coopers & Farrers.   Some of them lived in Bell End Kempston which is where the Half Moon pub is situated.  Merv goes to the HM and knows a lot about the history & people of Kempston.  He is very helpful.

Hi Sarah,
Like you I am studying my family history. In the late 1980's we sold a farmhouse that had been in the family for several centuries. The Coopers were some of my ancestors. I have abstracts of documents for the farmhouse going back to 1796 when it first came into the hands of the Coopers. I also have several copies of wills etc.
John Cooper (the elder) married Elizabeth Bean on the 18th October 1783 and to my knowledge they had 7 children, Samuel, Thomas, William, John, James, Charlotte and Sarah. Would this be the John Cooper you are looking for?

Hi. I've just been reading this thread, just new to rootschat! I am tracing my Cooper line who were Butchers in Hitchin and Baldock in the mid 1800's-1930's.. I think they may connect back to Shillington and possibly Kempston, it's something I'm trying to look at at the moment!
Does anyone else connect to Hitchin / Offley / Shillington?
