Title: BATES FAMILY of Saskatchewan
Post by: mandyjf on Sunday 01 May 11 00:16 BST (UK)
My great grandfather's sister, Alice Welham, married Frank Bates who emigrated to Canada in 1903 on the Manitoba. He was originally a Barr Colonist but changed his mind en route, I believe. I believe they were both prominent citizens of Saskatchewan and would be interested in anything anyone can find out there, particularly photos of the area etc. They had only one child, Alice Welham Bates, but she had several children.

Hi

The 1911 Census of Canada shows a family that might be the one you are after... but they have a child called Frances not Alice..... very hard to read though, so sorry for any errors I make in transcription.

1911 Census Canada Saskatchewan Saskatoon
Page 3 District 216 Sub District 40

BATES
Francis Male Head Marr 36 Born Nov 1875 England Emmigrated 1908 Employed in an Office
Alice Female Wife Marr 39 Born April 1872 England Emmigrated 1908 No Occupation
Francis Male Head Unmarr 8 Born July 1901 England Emmigrated 1908 No Occupation

Cheers

1916 Census Canada Saskatchewan Saskatoon
Roll T-21944 Page 19
12th Street

BATES
Francis F Male Head Marr 40 Born England Anglican Emmigrated 1903 Works in an Office
Alice Female Wife Marr 42 Born England Anglican Emmigrated 1907 No Occupation
Frances Alice Female Dau Unmarr 13 Born England Anglican Emmigrated 1907 No Occupation

This was far easier to read so much more likely to be correct in transcription

Cheers

Hi,

It looks like Frank and Alice are in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.  Their death dates are here, so this might help you find an obituary.

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix paper is free  :) in the Google Newspaper Archives.  Alice's obit is on page 24 of the May 19, 1959 edition:

Francis death notice is on page 22 of the Jan 13, 1949 edition:

His funeral notice is here on page 34 (it says Jan 14th, but I think they also filmed the 15th under the date of the 14th - look at the top of the page).

The S S Manitoba and the Barr colonists:

In case you don't already have it, this looks like him on the passenger list for the Lake Manitoba in April 1903.  He is F. F. Bates, age 30 and going to Battleford Sask.  He seems to be with someone called J B Bates, aged 22.

RK :)

ADDED - the passenger list link doesn't seem to be working properly.  You can find the free image at the Library and Archives Canada site.  Under passenger lists, look for the Lake Manitoba, arriving in St. John N.B. in April 1903.  F. F. Bates is on page 3 about a third of the way down.

Hey Mandy,

I saw this listing and thought I would see if I can lend a hand in your search.  RK and karen have done some very good groundwork hands off to you both.

I live in Saskatoon and maybe able to help a bit further.  The Barr Colonists were a known group of settlers in the Saskatoon and area, here is a link about them plus a transcription of the passenger list:

http://www.afhs.ab.ca/data/barr/index.html

Francis had applied for a homestead file (cheap land given by the government to work for a small period until the applicate made sufficent improvements to the land and was then given deed to it).  He may not have stayed long due to pressing circumstance, either abandoning his claim moved to the then Town of Sutherland near Saskatoon. Btw there was two other Bates nearby to his claim (Warrington Bates, and a James W. Bates).

Through expansion of the city, the town of Sutherland came to be with the city of Saskatoon.  They added a "1" to street numbers then so 12th street would be 112th street, the address is #3-112th Street.  Unfortunately the house may not be standing but can check that out as well as go to the cemetery and see if I can find the gravestones tomorrow.

Jeff

P.S. Christchurch church is still standing btw...:)

Hello everyone who answered my post
Wow! Thank you so much! Amazing!!!
There's such a lot to digest; I'm sure they are the right people. The couple had other children but none lived to adulthood other than their daughter. I think she was Frances Alice. Photos of their graves or places they knew would be amazing. I can't thank you all enough. I don't think I'll ever get to Canada to see all this, so your efforts all mean so much to me.

If you would like the census images for your records, they are all available for FREE :) :)

Karenlee found all of the references for you.  You can search the 1906 and 1911 censuses at:

http://automatedgenealogy.com/

Use the "split screen" or "split view" options at the top left of the transcript pages to see the actual images.

1911:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0d13/

Interesting to note that on the transcript page, there is information added by someone (probably living, so can't say the name here) about this family.  See the bottom of the page for contact information for this person.  He/she (name could be either??) may be able to help you.

The 1916 census is on the Library and Archives Canada site, but it is only searchable by location, not by name.  Thanks to Karenlee, you have the location information.  Here is the full location/reference page:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0d12/

From here, you can choose either JPEG or PDF to view the census.  I chose JPEG and posted page 19 for you:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0d11/

He is an accountant.  His obit says he had been the treasurer of the School Board for many years, so this fits very well.

Hey Mandy,

Just got back from the cemtery/library and your instincts were correct. The Francis Bates mentioned in the 1916 census was your great grandfather's sisters's husband.  He married Alice Welham  in Saskatoon in 1907 at St. James church (have a picture) her dad was S. Welham from Ipswich England.  Francis was born London November 29, 1874 London England.   His dad's name was John B. Bates from St. Albans in Hertfordshire. (the following was taken from a bio of him at the library btw)

Hopefully this makes sense to you, I will be in the Chatterbox for a little while if you need any clarification.  Also could you private message me your email addy, the gravestone pictures are a bit big bit wise to fit on Rootschat message.

Oh and the address on the 1916 census that they were living at is now a vacant lot  :).

Talk to you soon,

Jeff
