My gggrandfather, Patrick Reilly, was born Oct 30, 1831 to James Reilly and Mary Mooney but for location, all we know is it was Dunshaughlin. I don't know if he was referring to the townland of Dunshaughlin or the entire parish. I registered with one online service, searched and came up with several results, but to view any of them I had to pay a minimum of 5 euros just to look. No refund if the record was his (or his parents). This seems a very silly and expensive way to research your ancestors in Ireland. Are there any services online that could provide me with more information before I have to pay?

I presume you are referring to the website RootsIreland ?
It's the only comprehensive online source of parish records for Co. Meath that I've heard of. The other option would be to visit the National Library in Dublin and view the relevant parish microfilms ... assuming the family were RC.
If you select the search for Co. Meath (rather than the full system search) you can add a father's name filter to your search. You can also select to filter records by individual parish - see Co. Meath Search (http://meath.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?type=birth&new=1)
It looks like there could be a gap in the baptism records for Dunshaughlin parish before 1849.. see : Dunsaughlin Parish details (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Meath&parish=Dunshaughlin&churchid=922)
