Title: Overseas Births on Find My Past -
Post by: lana on Thursday 28 April 11 16:15 BST (UK)
Hello,

I have just received an email from Find My Past about their improved search facility for Overseas Records.

So I typed in the name of the person I have been searching for for 25 years.  And an interesting name came up.  Now the first name is not what I expected but the record is too interesting to ignore.

Does anyone know what further details you get from an overseas birth record on Find My Past, please?  Does it just give a reference or does it give more details than just name, date, country?

Many thanks

As well as the person's name, you will get the volume and page number, and the name of the particular British consulate at which the birth was registered; or in the case of birth at sea, the name of the ship. Post 1966 births, I think, give the mother's maiden name.

Many thanks for the reply.  I guess the consulate information would be yet another clue as to whether I am barking up the possible right tree or not?

How flexible is the GRO (I assume that is where I would apply for an overseas birth cert)?  Can you say I only want the certificate if the mother's name is such and such, please?

I'd have thought so.

It's ages since I bought a certificate, but I'm sure this is possible - I think you'll find it somewhere on the aplication form.
