Post by: dotslot on Tuesday 26 April 11 22:02 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any info about the Cossum family 1700-1800 living in Northiam/Hastings, Sussex. They were drapers and mercers.
Thanks

The IGI has a submitted record for:

Francis Cossum
chr 24 Aug 1763
Northiam
Father: Richard
Mother: Elizabeth
(this may be the wrong couple but possibly related in some way)

and extracted record for:
Richard Cossum = Elizabeth Tress
19 Nov 1751
Bodiam

Not sure if it's the same Richard and Elizabeth

Yes, it is the right couple I typed John instead of Richard so it should read Richard and Elizabeth Cossum.
Thanks

Do you already have much information about the family?

I take it you already have the following two children with Richard and Elizabeth as parents:
Mary 1773
Sarah 1771
both chr St Clements Hastings.

There are some marriges for Mary and Sarah Cossums but I'm not sure if any tie in time wise to these two girls. Can't see a marriage for Francis.

Of course the IGI may not be complete and I haven't tried the new search which may give more choices.  :)

No I didn't. The children I have are:
Elizabeth 1754, John 1756, Richard 1758, Ann 1760, Francis 1763 all Baptised in Northiam. There is quite a gap between 1763 and 1771 so presume more children were born to Richard and Elizabeth.

Still looking for POB for Richard and Elizabeth.
Richard was executor to his uncle John Cossum of Hastings, will 1773

Thanks that's a great help.
Do you know if Francis Cossum and Sarah Devas had other children apart from Charles?  Also when did Sarah Devas (Cossum) die.
Charles Cossum married Mary Ann House c.1813-d.1859 who was born in Stokenchurch in Oxon. They married in St.Pancras Church in 1837. They had two children Mary b.1838 and Francis b1840.  My great grandfather William Jenkins, a Barometer maker, married Mary Cossum in 1856 in St.Mark's Church, Clerkenwell. Mary died in 1873 having had 7 children.
Any additional info you might have would be highly appreciated.

Hi , My 4th Great-grandfather was Francis Cossum, who was married to Sarah Devas. His father was Richard Cossum, but I cannot find the parents of Richard. Their daughter Sarah Cossum is my 3d great-grandmother, she married William Everett Smith, who also was a draper.
Living in Norway, I find searching for scanned records really difficult in England. Do you know what part of the Cossums or Devas where Huguenot's? This is what information was passed down from my grandmother. I would love to share the little I have of my family. Best regards
Andrea
