Title: McGills of Kilrea

Hi,

This is a general query really.  Although I'm not new to family history research, I've always given the Irish branch a wide berth as I was never sure where to start!

Now, thanks to the 1911 Census I have more to go on as a birthplace than Ireland and have a place name 'Kilrea'

How do I go about searching further?  I've followed a few links off here but drawn a blank. 

Also a stab in the dark that someone may be able to claim the McGills of Kilrea.

Do you have any first names and dates for the McGills? The more details we have the easier it is to find information or suggest where to search next.

There were still McGills in Kilrea area in 1911- search for McGill under Hervey Hill D.E.D. to see them-

Yes I have a Hugh McGill bC1799 and wife Eliza (possibly nee Huston) bC1803.  They had several children inclusing Annie b1843 in Kilrea.

Some Kilrea church records go back quite far (First Kilrea Presbyterian Church for example)- what religion were your McGills?

I don't know for sure, I would assume they weren't catholic but can't be 100%.

The McGills I found in 1911 census were Catholic but I tend to think of Huston/Houston as mostly Presbyterian. Wonder if the surname could have been Magill?

Yes I wondered the same.  Seem to remember it was transcribed as MaGill on the 1851 Census when they were living in Cumbria

If you search for Magill in Griffith's Valuation under Co. Londonderry there are lots of Magills in Tamlaght O'Crilly civil parish which is the right area.

Sorry, amended my post as should have been 1851 not 1841 when I double checked my tree.
