:)Hy I wondered if anyone can help me find info on my grandfather Martin Brannan born 3 sep 1891 in Penicuik Mid Lothian. His parents were John Brannan b. 1868 and Euphemia Geddes b 1865They were married in penicuik in 1886 and had five children. their names were Martin 1891, Alexander 1893, Robert Geddes
1895, William1889, and James 1901. The first four children were born in penicuik and James was born in Peebleshire according to 1911 census. On john and euphemia,s marr/cert and also martins birth/cert it states their surname as brannan but on martins marr/cert its brennan They were living in lochgelly fife in 1911 and were still there when Martin married my grandmother Helen Stenhouse b 1895 Edinburgh. They were married in st cuthberts edinburgh 1918. and had five children. they lived in mussleburgh and edinburgh till they were divorced. I think this was between 1930s/40s. I cant find any info on him after this He was in Royal Engineers Joined 1915. and was in expeditionary force in France. If anyone can help it would be very much appreciated as im truly stuck kind regards

Hi romangirl
I've looked at the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue and there is a reference to your grandparents' divorce.
Reference CS46/1936/7/71
Interim decree of divorce: Helen Stenhouse or Brennan v Martin Brennan (Brannan)
Date of decree: 10 July 1936
Related material CS45/1287
You can view this reference at www.nas.gov.uk/catalogues/default.asp
If you get in touch with the archives you can either go along and view the file in person or you can request an estimate for them to send you a copy.
Hope this information helps. :)

???I have tried looking for death on Martin Brennan but have had no luck. Where did he go after 1936? I managed to find all his
brothers and parents death certs. Do you think maybe he moved abroad. Apparently on his youngest sons marr/cert. 1954 he is deceased. His mothers maiden name was geddes. I tried scotlands people and keep coming up with martin brennan from shotts but they are wrong parents.

Hi again romangirl
I've had another look at the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue and I've found a second reference to your grandparents' divorce. This reference is dated 1946 and the details are:
Reference CS258/13138
Title Helen Stenhouse or Brennan v Martin Brennan (or Brannan): Divorce
Dates 1946
This is obviously 10 years on from the reference to the interim decree of divorce I found yesterday. I think it may be worth your while to go and view these documents or to get a copy sent to you as they may give give you some information regarding your grandfather's location in the 1930s and the 1940s. This is turn may help you narrow down a location for your grandfather's death.
With regard to him being listed as deceased on his youngest son's marriage certificate, bear in mind that this information was given by his son. It may be true or if his son had not seen or heard from him for some time, he may have, for whatever reason said he was deceased. I have several certificates where my ancestors have given information which has proved to be inaccurate. Sometimes this seemed to be down to a genuine mistaken belief but sometimes it was clearly a lie on their part. ;D
Hope this information helps. :)

Hi romangirl
I think Martin Brennan may have been a bit of a career "bad boy". There are a number of possible references in the local paper to prosecutions of a Martin Brennan in the Edinburgh Courts from 1928-38....
If you have ordered the divorce papers from NAS, this should help in giving you some background I would have thought.

Hi again romangirl
I've had a look at The Scotsman archive and as MonicaL says there are a number of articles relating to convictions for Martin Brennan. Some give quite a bit of detail relating to the offences he committed.
You mentioned in your last post that you visited the National Archives so I presume that you live somewhere in Scotland. If you do then you can join the National Library of Scotland online for free. This will then allow you free online access to various newspaper archives including The Scotsman. You can join up at www.nls.uk
As soon as you register you will be able to access a wide variety of material online from the comfort of your own home. ;D
Hope this information helps.
