Can any one tell me how I would be able to obtain newspaper reports etc on a motor vehicle accident March 21st 1989, Hervey Bay, QLD

I would contact the Hervey Bay Police  ;)
They should point you in the right direction.

Hi there
unfortunately Trove only covers up 1954 at this stage.
Most newspapers have an online archive for a small fee
Also try the Ryerson Index.

Leanne the following newspapers are currently published in Hervey Bay -

Fraser Coast Chronicle, Hervey Bay Independent and The Hervey Bay Observer

I wonder if the local library could help you or point you in the right direction.

Im not sure of the circumstances but most MVA's will have a coronial inquest,
you may like to check this as records here a open, naturally this will have a lot of details.

I expect this particular case will hold information of a graphic nature as the accident was quite nasty.

Sorry it has taken me a while to get to this as the NLA only holds off-site paper copies of this newspaper so  iI had to wait for it to be brought from the other site.  I am assuming this is the accident that you were enquiring about -
 

from The Chronicle, Wednesday March 22, 1989 (Maryborough, Qld)

The whole front page tells of an accident in which 6 people died - a Hervey Bay family of four (Petronella Barrett and her children Michelle16, Kristy, 14 and Gary 12), a Maryborough woman (Patricia Madders 52), and the truck driver (Graham Roy Kirby, 35 of Marsden).  The truck was travelling north and collided with four cars travelling south.

I have photocopied the page and another page from the following day's paper as there is too much to transcribe.
