Title: Hughes (Bristol)
Post by: HelenHughes on Wednesday 20 April 11 13:33 BST (UK)
I've hit a brick walll with my ancestor Thomas Hughes (born in St. Peters Parish, Bristol) 1848). I know his father was John as his marriage certificate tells us but we cannot find a birth record or a christening record for him. He was married to Mary Ann Distin and his occupation was labourer (Docks) and Brewers Labourer. We know that lots of the parish records were destroyed in Bristol in WWII. I have all the census information for him but im uable to trace any further back. Does Thomas belong to anyone else tree?

Also trying to trace his eldest son, Thomas (1871) who married Sarah Jane Watkins (1871) and had two children, Thomas Albert (Albert Thomas (christening record is different to birth record) 1896) and Mabel Elsie (1894). Living in Houton Street, Bristol in 1911. Where did they go?

Hi,

I have found this family in 1851,

1851  HO107/1945  f.259  p.11  Bedminster, Somerset
Mill Lane

HUGHES
Mary Ann    Head    Widow    30    Parish Relief
Louisa        Daur    7
Thomas       Son    4                             All born Bristol

Louisa seems to be the only Louisa HUGHES born in Bristol around 1844 and there is a baptism to fit,

Louisa HUGHES    Mar Q 1844    Bristol    11  183

Louisa HUGHES
Christening: 07 Apr 1844, St James, Bristol, Gloucester
Father: Thomas HUGHES
Mother: Mary Ann

This looks possible for Thomas's birth, unfortunately I can't find a baptism,

Thomas HUGHES    Dec Q 1846    Bristol    11  161

I realise he seems too old to be 'your' Thomas but people often seem to change ages going through the censuses.

I hope you don't mind me asking but why do you think that Thomas was born in St. Peters Parish?

Regards,
Daisy

Hello Helen.....

I think that you mean that THOMAS Hughes married Mary Ann Distin, and not his father JOHN.

I have found this family on the 1851 census.

5 Garden Alley, St James , Bristol

JOHN Hughes/ head / age 33 / Mat Maker / born Bristol
Ann Hughes / wife / age 32 / born Bristol
THOMAS HUGHES / son / age 3 / born Bristol
Ann Hughes / mother / age 70 / born Bristol

Thank you all for these replies, Ive only just logged back in and seen them, Im so sorry its been so long.

Thanks Jeannie R, I did indeed mean that Thomas has married Mary Ann Distin, I just badly phrased the part about his father. I have come across that 1851 census return before but with no other info Im reluctant to follow it. Daisy, Im going to give the birth reference a shot and order the certificate. Our Thomas has a history of changing his date of birth to suit his needs. The reason I believe he was born in St Peters Parish is that was what he gave in his military records and also on several census returns.

Thanks for all your help
