Title: Gibson, Byker, Newcastle
Post by: KellG on Wednesday 20 April 11 09:42 BST (UK)
While tracing my wife's family, I was able to locate her G G Grandfather Thomas William Gibson.
He was apparently born around 1848 in Newcastle.
Married 21st June 1868 in Newcastle.
1881 Census was living in Byker Newcastle.

The problem is, for some reason I cannot find him in the 1851, 61, 71 or 91 Census.
I know his wife remarried in 1898.

Could this "dissapearence" be due to the name Gibson being spelt differently or misread by transcribers?

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks,
Dave

Its okay I have worked it out ,his wife is Elizabeth Balmbra born Gateshead her brother on the 1881 census is a glass blower born Manchester name spelt Bambrough,

Looking at the 1871 census Stepney Street All Saints Byker Newcastle Upon Tyne there is a

Thomas aged 21 and Mary aged 20 both born Newcastle, RG10/51O5,

I wonder if they changed their names around now and again, just a thought,

Hi Radcliff,

Thanks for your help.
Until now, I wasn't aware that Elizabeth had a twin brother! I found her Baptism records but have not found John yet.
As far as I can tell Thomas William Gibson was married to Elizabeth Balmbra in the 2nd quarter of 1868 at Newcastle All Saints.
The marriage record & the 1881 census are all I can find of him.
In 1881 they were living at 80 Shipley Street Byker.

Both being baptised on the same date does not mean they were twins.  I had 4 in the same family on the same date but ranged in age from newborn to age 8.

There is a sister Jane Bambrough being baptised the same day 25 July 1852, but no birthdate, Elizabeth's BD was 5 Jul 1850

Sorry to mislead you there ,both christened the same day,John states born Manchester in the 1881 census and Elizabeth Gateshead, this family prior to her marriage may have moved around I will retrace my steps as I think there was a mention of Middlesex for one of her parents in a census I was looking at earlier today,

Elizabeth was remarried in 1898 to George Matfin & died 4th June 1919.
By 1901 she had taken over the family tripe business started by her father.

It seems that the family did not move very far! John Bambrough lived at 8 St.Lawrence Road Byker in 1881.
In 1901 & 1911 Elizabeth was living there.
In 1936 my wife's Grandfather William Henry Gibson listed his place of residence on his marriage certificate as 8 St.Lawrence Road, Byker!

It is the Gibson side I'm struggling with.
William Henry Gibson was born 18th May 1913 Tynemouth.
His father Thomas Gibson was born 1877 Newcastle
Thomas Gibson's father Thomas William was born aroung 1848 Newcastle.

I've found Thomas Gibson in 1881 & 1901 & his father Thomas William in 1881

apart from that I can find no other mention of Thomas William Gibson

Maybe the glass industry was getting slower?
By 1871 John Bambrough was a "Tripe Dealer"
1881 "Tripe Prerarer"
His widow took over & in 1901 & 1911 is listed as "Tripe Preparer"

My wife's family mentioned the tripe business years ago & often wondered what happened to it.
(Not that I'm interested, I can't stand the stuff)!!!

I also finally discovered where my father in laws middle name of Bambrough originated from.

John left the tripe business to his wife in 1887,

Elizabeth Gibson Matfin made a real success of the business as when her will was granted probate in 1919 to John Pirrie Morrison and his wife Jane there was an estate of £1422 pounds 16 shillings and 7d,

now back to Gibson, Thomas is the son of Thomas in the marriage records ,do you have the marriage cert stating his  address and occupation when he married Elizabeth,
