One of my ancestors was the licensee (I think) of the Crown Inn, Hutton le Hole. Does anyone know how I can verify this? the census says he lived there but I'm wondering whether he was actually the licence holder.

depending on the date - i think historical directories would list the licencee of a pub:

Thank you very much. If I don't find what I want this time there are numerous things I can look up here - it's a new site to me. Kind regards.

I wonder if the records of the court issuing the licence still survive?

there may be some mention in the 19th century newspapers which you might be able to access via your local Library.

Thanks all of you - you have given me some ideas.

Hi Goff,
With reference to Bryan's reply, on Saturday, December 8th 1849 in The York Herald, and General Advertiser - there is an article about the Crown Inn being sold at public auction.

Hello,
So sorry about this - I genuinely wasn't aware the image I posted was subject to copyright. If I hadn't checked back to this thread I still wouldn't have known and therefore might have carried on posting these clips quite happily in my ignorance.
In an instance like the one up above - where there's people like myself who don't usually transgress and ignore the guidelines regarding copyright - a quick message to the poster might help, ensuring they don't repeat their mistake.
Kind regards,
Pels.
