Hello all
Would someone kindly check the 1900 census for "Smith Hitchcock". He would have been born 1872 in Clifton, York, and in 1900 should still be living in the Clifton area. He would be listed as a widower, his wife Lucy (Atkinson) having passed away in 1896 at the age of 24. I'm wishing to find out if they had any children.
Thank you very much

Hi cant find him on 1901 census maybe he emigrated. regards Mirf

According to FreeBMD, Smith Hitchcock married Lucy Atkinson in March 1894 in the Halifax Reg. District.
FreeBMD says Lucy Hitchcock died March 1896 aged 24 in the Halifax District so I would have thought that any children born would also come from Halifax....
There are also 2 Hitchcock births in Halifax in that period as well....
Elsie born June 1894 (so conceived several months before they were married!)
Oliver Garner born June 1895
Hope this helps!!

Thank you very much, The Mc. When I look at the 1881 census I see that Smith Hitchcock had a brother named Garner, so I suspect Olive Garner is theirs. Thanks again.

Also, thanks for looking Mirf. With a first name of "Smith" he should eventually turn up somewhere in the world.

He could be one of these who died in America.......

Hi all :)
Conveniently, the link posted by MC also shows Olive's christening, parents Smith Garner Hitchcock and Lucy. She dies 1895 though, so won't be around in 1901.
There's a Smith Garner (not Hitcchcock) in 1901 at Bradford, age 29 born Brighouse.
If it wasn't for the fact he's shown as single, I'd quite like him - earlier censuses don't seem to have a matching Smith Garner.
-
That's interesting - I'll have to look into Smith Garner a little further. It wouldn't be the first time somebody referred to themselves as single even though they had been previously married.

Hello. Your Mr Smith Garner who is working as a Dyers Labourer on 1901 Census departs Liverpool for Boston USA 14 March 1907. He is listed as single, aged 35, born 1872 and his occupation is dyer. He sails on the 'CYMRIC'..
