My great grandparents, Jane Good and Thomas Roberts, were married in Canongate on 21 April 1899. Jane's parents were James and Christina (MS Tait); Jane gave her age as 21.
I can't find a marriage of James Good and Christina Tait. However, I did find a marriage of James Good and Christine Tait McIntyre in Canongate on 29 December 1882.
Am I on the right track?

Anyone any ideas?

Hiya, did you find Janes birth cert? c 1878, can you find her in the 1881/1891 census, just so you could maybe confirm her parents ages, see if they tie in with the ages on the marraige cert?
Susan.

Hi Stuart
Could this be young Jane in 1891 I wonder?

Sorry for the tardy response; I've been off for a while!
I have been unable to find a BC for Jane - I'm not even sure who to look for; Jane Good, Jane Tait, Jane McIntyre or someone else. Hence my original question.

There was a death of a Christina Good, other name M*cIntyre, born 1842, in 1912, St George, Edinburgh. I found this on scotlandspeople under their free search. I am sure this must be your Christina and it may give you more clues.
Another thought, but haven't found anything yet, could she have been married before?

Rae,
Thanks. I'll try that avenue. I'll let you know the results!

There is this entry in 1901:
James Good 56, Labourer (general) b. South Leith
Chirstina Good 59b. South Leith
James Good 25 Labourer (general) b. Edinburgh
Address: 3 High Street, Edinburgh
I saw this earlier, just had a problem finding Jane with this family. From 1891:
James Good 45 labourer b. Duddingston
Christina Good 46 b. Hill, Niddrie
James Good 15 Apprentice Blacksmith b. Edinburgh
Address: 52 Holyrood Sq, Edinburgh
We had a possible entry for Jane in 1891 from earlier, already working away from home.
Stuart, you had found a possible later marriage for James and Christina in 1882.
Would be good to get some clues from 1881 ::)

Thanks Monica. I'm having trouble with the 1881 Census. Again, I don't know who to look for!
I've got a couple of things to work at. I'll post my results!

Stuart, I'll just post a few 1881 entries with some of the names we have:
The closest I can see for a James Good (thinking here of future 1891/1901 entries already posted):
James Good 61, tailor b. Dalkeith, Edinburghshire
Catherine Good 45, wife (must be second wife given age)
James Good 36, son, brewer's lab. b. Duddingston
Christina Good 13
Thomas Good 10
Catherine Good 9
Gordon Good 5
Ann Good 3
Address: Echo Bank, Liberton Midlothian
1881 has a Christina Tait b. 1844 in Liberton showing as working in 6 Chambers Street, Edinburgh. I was trying to link her back to famiy but couldn't as there is there is also a 9 yrs old Christina Tait b. Libberton c. 1843/4 working away from home in 1851 and then every census year after that (1861/71/81).
For 1881, this was the only entry I could see that might fit for young Jane:
Ann Tait 64
George D Tait 39
Jemima Tait 32
Ann D Marshall 44
John Marshall 14
Helen Y Tait 10
Annie H Tait 8
Elizabeth Tait 7
Jane D Tait 5 grandchild b. Leith
Norah C Tait 4
Margaret Sterril 0
High St Bonnyrigg, Cockpen, Midlothian
Cannot see anything else Stuart. Not sure whether these isolated entries are connected. Also can't see anything under the surname McIntyre which seems to feature :-\
Have you viewed the 1882 marriage entry for the James and Christina that you found?

Thanks again, Monica, I quite liked the look of Jane D Tait as well. I've not yet looked at the MC; I'll get some credits tomorrow!

Right. I'm getting somewhere - I think! Still not sure if it is along the right line!
The Christina Good who died in 1912 is the same one who married James in 1882. I'm fairly sure that the brewer's labourer James Good who was living with James and Catherine Good in 1881 is the groom - age/employment/lack of alternatives. Although, the only marriage to a James Good to a Catherine is in 1867 and they are the same age - so not them.
Still working on Jane though. That lot aforementioned may be from a different tree!

Jane Dudgeon Tait is not mine. Father was George - as expected. Mother was Jane (I think) rather than Jemima - possible transcription/reading error (it's a poor copy!)

Nothing added in nearly 2 months. I guess that this thread has run its course.
Thanks.
