I'm trying to track down my Grandfather's sister who, according to the 1881 Census was born circa 1875 in Kilburn, London.
There appears to be nothing in the BMD listings nor through Ancestry.com.
Are there any other ways to search please?
Many thanks

Hi Kevin
A late baptism at All Saints South Acton
22nd July 1885 parents William & Polly Pinnock of 35 Stafford Road, South Acton, labourer
Edith born 23 Aug 1875
William born 2 Oct 1880

1891 shows Edith was born in Ireland , mother Mary Ann by then was a widow

Interesting. It wasn't actually compulsory to register births until the mid 1870s so she may have just slipped through the net. Her mother is shown as unmarried too so maybe she did not want to register the birth for that reason. Does father William appear on later census?

Edith appears to marry Thomas William Barnett 7 Apr 1894 at St Michael & All Saints Bedford Park, the same church as William in 1906 and same home address 5 Chapel Place. Edith names her father as 'George' though.
Place of birth in 1901 census is back to Kilburn.

In fact she is shown on her marriage certificate as aged 19 and her father as a George Pinnock.
However her brother William born in 1880, his father is shown as William John. His birth certificate shows no father!!
Their mother, Mary Ann was shown in the 1881 Census as unmarried, but in the 1891 Census as widowed.
So there's the problem!!
Thanks so far

Hi Dawn
Can you send me the link please for the baptism record?
Thanks

Thanks LM
That confirms everything I have at this stage.
Many thanks for the detailed information.

Well, I'm in a quandry now.
By the look of things it may be that Edith's "mother" Mary Ann may have been a relative if the entry in the 1881 Census of unmarried is correct.
Further investigation is under way!!
Again many thanks for all those who have helped me.

Talking of Strafford Road, Acton.....would anyone be able to tell me how I could find some pictures of Strafford Road as my family come from the Acton area and lived in that road.
Sorry if I have intruded on your message, but I have been trying to find pictures for a long time and found nothing.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jackie
Cannot find anything on the web to show Strafford Road as it was. By the look of street view on Google maps, the street looks to have been re-developed over the years.

Hi Dawn
Been away for several weeks now.
My family tree gets a look in every few months as it's pretty time consuming, so I guess next month or so I'll be having another little investigation.
Thanks for all the help. It is appreciated.

Hi Kersen
So Len and Connie were you Grandparents? They were my Uncle and Aunt on my Mum's side and they lived at 26 Muirfield, Acton with Nanny and Grandad.
I can remember going round there many a time with my Mum to play with the boys Richard and Michael.
Len used to work at the BBC, something to do with scene shifting I believe.
What a small world!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kevin :)
Dad remembers you! He says Hello!
You used to live near salt hill park is that right!
It's nice to see some relations on that side of the family, theres only dad and Richard left.
-
We certainly did. The street was called Salt Hill Way and we lived at no 66 down by the park.
We moved there when my Dad died in 1961. We had lived in Maidstone from 1957 and my brother George was working near Slough, so it was better for us all to move.
Sadly George died in 1982, but my other brother Kenny and my sisters Rita and Linda are all fit and well.
I'm sure your Dad would remember them.
Haven't done family tree for a little while, but I'm sure now that the nights draw in, I will be back on it pretty soon.
Trust you are well
Kevin

I pass that road most days to get to work i live not far from the farnham road, very small world :)
Dad definately remembers kenny and rita as he mentioned them to me. Its strange he said to me not long ago that he wondered what had happened to his cousins.
I have managed to trace nans tree back to 1500s not hard considering they didnt move far out of a number of leicestershire villages, i wasnt having so much luck with granddads tree! Have you got very far with our side?
-
As far as the Pinnock's go I have nothing other than William's father George. The question regarding Edith was (I think) something to do with the names of the fathers shown on marriage certificates.
If you look at your Great Grandmother Sarah Pinnock nee Briggs, then that line I have back as far as 1830. Herein lies a tale - George Briggs (Sarah's father) was born out of wedlock in 1853 by Matilda Briggs. The father I have discovered was a scottish fella Andrew Scott who she married after George was born. They then had another son, Walter, who had the surname of Scott.
Curiously, both George and Walter lived in the same street in Tibshelf (where my Mum was born), so they were brothers with different surnames!!
When I get back to the Tree, I will be looking more closely at the Pinnock side.
As you say a small world with Slough. What road do you live in?

Hi
Coming back to to this thread after many months and wondering if there is any other information available?
This is what I have found so far. Edith was born in 1875, probably Kilburn, Middx. She lived with her mother, Mary Ann until she married Thomas Barnett in 1894. There are no records I can find relating to her birth.
I am also looking at her brother, my Grandfather, William John Hyde Pinnock. (His name is also shown as William John Henry). He was born in 1880, but his birth certificate does not indicate who his father was. Hyde seems to be an odd christian name so I have been investigating this name.
A very tenuous link is that Thomas Barnett's father married at the Christ Church, Ealing and there was a marriage of a William James Henry Hyde in 1872 also at the same church.
Probably clutching at straws here, but you never know.
Any suggestions would be great

Hi, my great grandmother was Edith( edie ) Pinnock married to Thomas William Barnett. They lived at 121 Parkway Rd Eaton. They had three children, Tom, hilda( my grandmother ) & beatrice. We grew up with the story that Edith & a brother were iligitimat, there mother was well up the ranks of house keeping & went to work in France, it is unclear wether Edith & brother are of french &/or spanish origin. There mother never had to worry about money. Thomas Barnett my greatgrandfather, had a sister Eliza, Thomas fathered a child while still married to Edith, Edith & kids( adults) left him & moved to Torque for a year then came out to new zealand, only then let friends know where they were. I believe Thomas married the mother of his child. I have marriage certs, photos of Thomas & sister, & of Edith, she lived till 94, I was to young to remember her. Hope this helps

With Mary Anne Pinnock giving her places of birth as Waltham Abbey Essex & Hertfordshire, this looks a good bet for her bapt. 15/9/1844 born 19/8/1844 Cheshunt Hertfordshire,
Parents William & Ann
She could have used her father's name for a fake husband?

Certainly may explain why I have been unable to find any father to William and Edith. Strangely enough, on Edith's marriage certificate of 1894, it gives her father as George Pinnock! Maybe this was an Uncle or some other relation.
All in all a very strange situation, but I suppose not uncommon back then.
Many thanks for the continued help.

Edith Barnett was my great-grandmother. She had three children Hilda Edith, Beatrice and Thomas. She left her husband and ran away from Acton to Torquay. Beatrice married a WW1 NZ soldier and came to live n NZ. All the rest (Edith, Hilda and Thomas) came to NZ and lived here for the remainder of their lives. Beatrice's marriage did not last and she married someone with the surname and Don. There were two children from this marriage - Ken and Bob. My grandmother was Hilda Edith. She married John Lewis Latimer (called Lewis) and had one child - Hilda Edith Katrina Latimer. Hilda Edith Katrina Latimer (my mother) married Jack Osburne Stone and had 4 children. Grant Stone

When did Edith run away to Torquay? Sounds like a stormy relationship.
Also have you the name of Beatrice's husband?
Many thanks
