Dear all,
For those of you researching Donald families in the North-East of Scotland, I am compiling a database of families in Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Kincardineshire, working back from the 1841 census.
I currently have over 100 families representing over 1000 individuals and have used statistical mapping and DNA techniques to try to determine the origins of these families.
More information can be found at: http://www.astro.keele.ac.uk/~iain/donalddatabase.html.
If you are interested in Donald families from this area, please get in touch. Best regards,
Iain.

Dear William,
Thanks for getting in touch. I have traced this line back to the early 1700s, via their father:
George Donald (b. 1792, m. 1818 Anne Johnson, d. 1889), son of
James Donald (b. 1765, m. 1786 Ann Thompson), son of
William Donald (b. 1729, m. 1757 Jean Skakel), son of
John Donald.
If you are related to Walter and George, then you have a number of relatives in both Australia and Scotland who are researching your line. If you contact me privately, I can pass on the details of the above lineage and put you in touch with other members of this Donald family. Best regards,
Iain.

Dear Iain,
Just wondering if you might have any of my family in your database? Specifically, Robert Humphrey married Bessie Donald Aug 1754 in Cairnie by Huntly, Aberdeen. They had 5 children that I know of, James 1757, Alexander 1761, Margaret 1763, Margaret 1767 and Jean 1771. Jean married James Grant in 1810 at Keith. Robert Humphrey was buried in 1789 at Keith, however I do now know when Bessie died or where she was from. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Cody Cockwill

Dear Iain,
Just wondering if you might have any of my family in your database?
Hi Cody,
I don't have this Bessie Donald specifically. I don't follow the female lines once they change their name.
Looking backward, there were two Donalds in Cairnie in the 1696 poll tax returns: John Donald (presumed single) at Miln of Kernborow and Androw (Andrew) Donald and his daughter at Hillsyde.
In 1758, a wealthy Jamaican merchant, James Donald, is recorded to have died. He was the son of a James Donald of Cairnie. (Scots Colonists/America; Scot. Settlers N. Am.; both available at archive.org).
I hope these give you some leads to work with. Cheers,
Iain.

The link is now outdated and only describes an overview page. Please PM me if you want to have a look at the database itself.
