My g mother was adopted in Victoria. Would like to find who her natural parents were. She was born in 1874 and William and Anne Austin adopted her. I wonder if the Hayes in her name was her natural father's name.
Can't find any trace of her adoption in Victoria.
Need some contacts please.

Hi Setterrex,
I wonder if you could broaden the picture for us ;D
Where was CATHERINE MARY brought up in her early days?
How many other children did the AUSTIN's have?
Where does your information come from?
In my experience, there was not formal process for adoption in those times. A baby was simply handed over and this was very often within a family or between close neighbours.
The child may even belong to the older daughter of a couple.
Not that I am saying this in your case, but it is a common enough happening.
So, if you could provide any more information, it may help.

Hi Sue,
Thanks for your reply.
You know, I think you may be right! William and Anne Austin had another daughter, Mary, who died aged 25 years 30/4/1881. The family lived in Melbourne. I will hunt for a marriage certificate for her. I believe the death cert for Catherine Mary Hayes gave no infor on her birth parents.
Catherine Mary Hayes Austin was born 1874 in Melbourne. That is all the infor I can find on her. An aged aunt told us she was adopted. The Hayes name would probably be the father's name?
I have some hunting to do...
regards,
Kate
