Title: Opinion on date please
Post by: indaba on Wednesday 13 April 11 22:33 BST (UK)
The gentleman in this photo appears to be wearing a railway worker's uniform.

The most likely candidate is an ancestor who died in Holyhead in 1898 at the age of 45 yrs and at the time of his death was described as a Railway Goods Porter.

Please could the experts give their opinion as to the approx date of this picture to confirm whether the above facts would fit.

Regards - Margaret.

From what he's wearing it's impossible to say, however the cardstock is an 1890's style but we'd have a better idea if we could see the back.
My view is that this is a memorial photo & a copy of a larger one where he was photo'd with others & they have been removed to leave just him, that's why it looks a bit odd with all the white space.

Well, the dark cardstock is typical of the 1890s, but the photo isn't. It looks like it has been snipped from a larger photo, possibly of a group. This may well be a memorial portrait, made after the fellow had passed away.

Not likely to have any printing on the back, but if there is could we see it please?

Cheers,
China

Well as usual Jim has beaten me to it, so I'll just post this as written. Got to have the last word, y'know :D

Thanks Jim and China for your very swift responses and helpful comments.

I am hoping to have access to the original within the next few days and will certainly post the reverse when this is received.

Many thanks for your help
