Post by: loobee589 on Wednesday 13 April 11 06:18 BST (UK)
I am searching for any info re. my 2 X Gt Grandparents William Irvine & Rachel Beattie of Roberton, Selkirkshire/Roxburghshire, Scotland. William was employed as a labourer at Milsington between circa 1818 - 1833. William's parents were also a William Irvine, mother Mary ?. Any info would be much appreciated.

I do not know if this William Irvine is the father of my William Irvine or not.  My ggg grandfather William Irvine was born 18 Nov 1830 in Scotland.  He emigrated to the US in 1873 from Ireland with wife and family.  A possibility?

loobee589, have you looked on Ancestry? There are a number of public trees there with William and Rachel, however William's father is named as Magnus & mother Margaret.

Hi Harvoid. I have also noted on ANCESTRY the William Irvine & Mary Allen Family, however my family knowledge does not correspond with the son William of this couple. This William went to USA where my William was the one that married Rachel Beattie, who d at Contin. Wiliam emigrated with some of his children to NZ and died 16 Feb 1865.
William & Rachel's son William married Ellen Common and settled in Australia, while daughter Elizabeth married William Campbell and stayed in Scotland.
Because I have no earlier info other than what is stated on his burial record of parentage of William Irvine & Mary ? and being born circa 1799/1800, I am at a lost as to proof.
Because of his life at Roberton, Roxburghshire, I believe he had an elder sister, Elizabeth who married Robert Laidlaw and settled at Guelph, Canada.

Re. the Royal Household article on Rootschat was posted by my brother, Mike.

Thanks for your offer of contact the said person re. the book. I have a copy of this book as they are on my line an am able to contact them. I do not believe their info to be correct as their seems to be no definitive written proof of William Irvine & Mary Allen being the parents of my William.

Have been in contact with a descendant of the William Irvine & Mary Allen line and they have verified that this couple is not the parents of William Irvine who died in NZ 1865.

Hi Loobee589

It is good that you have finally dismissed my relations as coming from
one William Irvine and Mary Allen of Newcastle.

My Grt Grt Grt Grandfather did marry a Mary ........? and many people have
assumed that because my Grt Grt Grandfather born 1799/1800 was the
saon of the above. He was indeed born in England, but that's where the
proof stops.

Grt Grt Grandfather died on 7 Dec 1865 at Geraldine in New Zealand aged
65 years. His wife Rachel Beattie died in 1839 aged 38 years, and is buried
at Contin Rossshire.

An earlier entry for my Grt Uncle William Irvine born 18 Nov 1830 is incorrect.
He was born 18 Nov 1830, but at Deanburnhaugh Cottage Roberton Roxburghshire.

Hope this information clears a few points
Regards Mike.

Hi T. Also nice to hear from you.

Thought I'd better correct a couple of errors on this last message
and also on " Royal Household ".

John Scott of Millsington was wrong. His correct name was William Scott
that died on the 3rd April 1829. The new tennant was Charles Scott,
Sir Walter Scott's 1st cousin. In Sir Walter's diary dated 10th April 1829
he gives reference to his cousin approaching him regarding an approach
to the Duke of Burrcleugh on obtaining Milsington.

It was also 1829 that Robert Laidlaw moved to Ontario, and later his
brother David moving to Bovina Delaware USA where many of the Scott
families had moved to, as well as one Janet Scott of the Milsington Family.

Hope these corrections help researchers.

Mike

Kia ora

I am intrigued by this correspondence. I am a Beattie descendant with John Beattie, my g grandfather being born in Roberton c 1810. He lived at Contin and at Poolewe before emigrating to New Zealand with seven family members in 1861. Recently when doing family research I was puzzled by the use of Jane Irvine twice (in the late 1800s) in family names with no link being known. Since then the marriage of Rachael Beattie to an Irvine has been mentioned, but I am unsure whether we have any connection to Rachael Beattie. However the Roberton and Contin links suggest this could be so. Do you have any more information about Rachael?

The John Beattie I am referring to married Elizabeth Elliott, also with southern ancestry (Westerkirk, Jamestown) but along with other Elliott family members she later lived in Contin and the Jane irvine name is also found in Elliot descendants.

Hi NZDawn. I have little info on Rachel Beattie other than her being c. at Hawick, Roxburghshire on 15 Mar 1794 and d. 17 Dec 1839, being bur at Contin, R&C, Scotland. Due to the age discrepancy on her headstone, I have no factual proof of her parents but presume they are John Beaty & Jane Robson.
Re. Jane Irvine, she was b. 9 Mar 1818 at Hawick, Roxburghsire, & c. 16 Apr 1818 at Roberton. It is stated on her c. 'That she is the natural child of William Irvine' but no mother mentioned. William Irvine & Rachel Beattie were not married until 15 Dec 1819 at Roberton. If you would like to contact me via my email address I could give you further info.
