Can anyone help please with the birth of Jane Johnston around 1892. Her mother, also Jane (nee Laidlaw), and father, Robert, were married in Humbie in 1868, so I am assuming their daughter was born in East Lothian.
Thank you

Have you found the family on the 1901 (or perhaps NOW the 1911) Scottish census. That might help with place of birth.
Were there any other children for which you have details? - again, possibly more confirmation of where Jane would have been born.
Problem with a name like Jane Johnstone is that there are so many variables. Jane Jean Janet etc and of course the alt spellings of Johnstone.

Hi Dave,
What was Robert's occupation on the marriage certificate? That could be a help.

Thank you Dave and Rae. I am sorry I haven't replied earlier.
On the 1911 census, Jane is living with one James Dobbins and their illegitimate son. Her place of birth is Grennock. I have tried earlier censuses (?) but there are too many Jane Johnstons!
Her father, Robert, was a coal miner.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

That helps a lot.
On ScotlandsPeople, there are two Jane Johnstons born Greenock around the correct time, between 1890 and 1894.
1891 JOHNSTON JANE ALLAN F GREENOCK WEST /RENFREW
GROS ref 564/02 0559
1892 JOHNSTON JANE FREDERICK F GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW
GROS ref 564/01 0340
You can view these online here http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Minimum purchase is £7 but will be worth it as the actual doc will show both sets of parents plus other helpful info.
Does either of the middle names, Allan or Frederick mean anything to you? It is likely that will be the name of the mother or another grandparent.

Thank you for that, Dave.
I will give a try, though neither Frederick or Allan have come up before!

Hi Lesley
Is this Jane Johnston the Jane who went on to have a child with James Dobbins www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,519159.0.html?
From the info Ev found on the other post, I thought Jane was born c. 1885?

a death for jane dobbins(other surname johnston) 1922 stirling stirling
born c1885

Did you check the 1922 death cert to see whether her parents' names matched what you had from the 1916 marriage cert to James Dobbins?
Have you been able to find Robert Johnston and wife Jane Laidlaw in the earlier censuses following their 1868 marriage in Humbie?
There are two children showing on IGI for them, Robert b. 1871 in Garvald, East Lothian and Janet b. 1873 Haddington, East Lothian.
From your other post here on Jane Laidlaw's family www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,519436.0.html, am I right in thinking she was born c. 1848 in Melrose?
There is this 1901 census entry:
Jane Johnstone 53, charwoman b. Melrose
Georgina Johnstone 14 charwoman b. Humbie
Address: Peffers Place, Haddington
I am still trying to find the earlier censuses for the family....and to figure out how Jane fits in with this family given she doesn't show in the household in 1901.

Daughter Georgina's name has helped with finding their 1891 entry:
Jane Johnston 48 Farm Servt b. Melrose
Janet Johnston 18 b. Haddington
Georgenia Johnston 4 b. Humbie
Address: 6 Eweford, Dunbar
And for 1881:
Jane Johnstone 30, agr. lab., b. Melrose
Robert Johnstone 9 b. Garvald
Janet Johnstone 6 b. Haddington
Margaret Murray 36, sister laundress b. Earlston, Berwickshire
Address: Humbie
Not much sign of husband Robert Johnston is there :-\
Still can't see how your Jane fits in with this family...unless she didn't like the name of Georgina and changed it to Jane in later years! The daughter Georgina is the only one in the household who come close to anything of what you have for Jane, but all guesses at this stage. You also have the issue of a Greenock birth place that Jane gave in her 1911 entry. Never easy is it!
