Title: Service Records WWI - Kent
Post by: Nanny with Rosie on Monday 11 April 11 17:53 BST (UK)
Could  someone help me find the Service Record of Charles Stephen Baker who stated he was a Private in the 4th Buffs when he got married in December 1914 Canterbury?

Not all the 1st WW Service Records survived the 2nd WW. 4th Buffs also known as East Kent Regiment. There is a medal roll for C S Baker of East Kent regiment, whivh gives his regiment number as 211165. This service number does not produce any hits in either service or pension records.

Thank you for your speedy response.   Does that mean I cannot find out his date of birth, where born and parents, etc?

Hi,

His marriage certificate should show his age;  also the name and occupation of his father.  Using those details you should be able to track him and his family through the census records.

Going back to your other post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,523267.0.html are the names of the marriage witnesses any help?

Do you know when/where he died?  Is there a surviving monumental inscription?  Would there have been a newspaper obituary?

Have you sighted baptisms of the children to see if there is any regimental number for any children born cWW1?

If there are any surviving electoral registers for the area he was living c1918 the absent voters section might list regimental numbers.  That is assuming he was away from home bearing in mind that the 4th Buffs was a TA unit and some of them remained in England for the duration of the war from what I have read.  Saying that, there was also a lot of moving between regiments.

Is there no family heresay of siblings/other relatives or anything else that might give a clue as to his origins?

Hi,

FreeBMD has a marriage registration for a STEPHEN Baker DecQ 1914 Canterbury;  there is a "postem" from another researcher which might be useful.

Further to the suggestion about censuses - when I looked on the 1911 for Mill Lane Canterbury (where mother lived at time of Charley Stephen's birth and where they both lived when they got married) I had no success, nor with Church Lane Stour Street Canterbury (address of Charley in 1939) as the Church Lanes had been merged - I think there may have been several in Canterbury of old!

Witnesses on the 1914 marriage cert were the mark of Albert Jones and Elvy Jones signed.

Thank you Nanny Jan for the info on FreeBMD - I will take that one up.

Charles Stephen comes from the marriage cert of his son Charley Stephen m. 1939 St Dunstan's Canterbury.

Thank you for your help - I  remember looking at this family before but did not feel comfortable about it being the right one, but I think your tie-up through the witnesses to Stephen's wedding puts it in the right family - right place.

If I can recall correctly the census taker must have misheard Ophelia's name - I think she was Phoebe in the 1891 census, but I cannot find my notes at the moment to confirm this, nor that Elvy was down as Alvy.

Once again thank you for your help.

Morning - my interest is due to my granddaughter - her father is the Baker.

Sorry cannot give more info at the moment as my pc has crashed with all the records - exceedingly frustrating.
