Title: TOOVEY - Denver, Colorado death
Post by: proud to be welsh on Monday 11 April 11 12:52 BST (UK)
Could anyone help me to find dates of death for the following please?

TOOVEY- William  - born Reading, England, 30 Mar 1846 and his wife
TOOVEY - Agnes (nee Barnes) born Surrey, England 29 Dec 1854

The last address I have for them was East 20th Ave, Denver, Colorado in the US Federal Census of 1930.
I believe they owned the Toovey Hotel in Denver and were of good standing as all 3 daughters married well to Presidents of Banks and Timber & Oil companies in Colorado & Wyoming.

They were both advanced in age in 1930, so I reckon deaths would be prior to 1940.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

Just wondering if you knew that William  applied for a US passport in 1925?
The application has a photo of him on it.

Cheers

Hi

They're both buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver.
Agnes 1934 and William 1938.

Photographs of the markers for their plots are included:

Ambly

Amazing. Thank you so much.

I've just looked up the website. I have been on it many times before, but without a year date it has been diffcult. It's such a shame there aren't exact dates.

Agnes was my x2 great aunt. I have the passport photo with their grandaughter Alaine Meyer on it from Ancestry. There are photos of Alaine in School Drectories too. I haven't found a marriage for her yet but she was a glamourous young lady.

The Tooveys visited the UK many times from the time of their emigration until the 1920's and often stayed in Streatham London where Agnes's family lived. It has been interesting reading the ship manifests watching them go to and fro - (Despite a multitude of alternate spellings)

You might find it of interest that the Toovey's  granddaughter Celeste McDaniels also married well and her son William Merriam Bart Berger was the founder of the Berger Prize for Art. (he's buried in Fairmount Cemetery.)

Once again thanks for you help

I found an article in the Emporia (Kansas) Gazette from 13 Sept. 1934 that says "The first meeting this fall of the Social Order of the Beauceant was held Wednesday evening in the Masonic Temple.  After a short business session, a memorial service was held for Mrs. William Toovey of Denver, Colo., past supreme worthy president."

I also found an article in the Greeley (Colorado) Daily Tribune from 30 Apr. 1934 that says the Social Order of the Beauceant had an affair in Denver honoring Mrs. William Toovey, past supreme president, on her 56th wedding anniversary and another past supreme president on her wedding anniversary.

Hello Carolyn,

There was an article in the Greeley Daily Tribune June 15th 1932.

A secret marriage which occured in Greeley last June 25th aroused considerable interest with its announcement in Boulder this week. It was the marriage of Miss Alaine Meyer and Edward Hartwell 111.
A reception honouring the couple will be held at the home of Mr Hartwells Mother Sunday.
Mrs Hartwell is a graduate of the University of Colorado and a member of P1  Beta Phi. Her husband a graduate of Dartmouth is a Sigma Chi. The two will live in boulder.

Regards
Sandra

Also in the Greeley Daily Tribune JUne 25th 1931

Marriage License iissued by the County Clerk to Edward E Hartwell and Clara Meyer of Los Angeles.

Believe that to bge Edward Everett Hartwell born 2 Sewptember 1907 to Edward Everett Hartwell (1880 - 1921) and Grace O Officer 1885 -1971

This seems to mention Mrs. William Toovey being a charter member of the Social Order of the Beauceant - http://www.freemason.com/library/defned36.htm

They are in a 1913 Denver directory here:  http://www.distantcousin.com/directories/co/denver/1913/Page.asp?Page=1731

Hello Shellyesq

It is the correct Mrs Toovey as Agnes and William were married on 27 Apr 1878.

The son in laws were members of Masonic Temples as I have found references to them on-line, especially Carlyle Dougan Williamson who married the youngest daughter Blossom.

If I were to contact you via private reply would you be able to e-mail copies of these documents?

As I have said earlier it has been a fascinating journey following Agnes and William and I feel that I know them. I have a couple of photos of Agnes and William at family weddings in London early in the 1900's. However, they are not on my nana's wedding photo in Dec 918 as WWI had only just finished.

Many of my late mothers and sisters (14 of them were born in London) are still alive and in their late 60's - late 80's will be delighted to learn about Agnes, their great aunt.

Thabk you for the info

Carolyn

Hi again Sheelyesq.

I was posting my reply when yours came through so messages crossed!

Alaine was a grandaughter of Agnes and William,  daughter of Raymond D Meyer & Violet Louise Toovey.
Thank you for her married name. A clandestine marriage - skeletons in the closet I wonder? I'll look on Find A Grave and see if I can find a memoraial as he parents are in Fairmount Cemetery as I was guided there earlier.

Regards

Carolyn

Hi Sandra

I must thank everyone today for their help - despite keeping me from the housework!

I'm on Ancestry and can't believe that Alaine Meyer didn't come up with matches. There is a lovely photo of her at college in the year books. Very glam.

I'm going to look at the tree and see if the e-mail is still valid and contact them. Also putting in Edward Everett Hartwell should come up with some treasures

Thanks again
