Hi,
Now that I have started my family tree my husband is keen, but he is not good with the computer so:
His Great Grandmother was Hannah Elizabeth Crane born 1890 in Rockhampton she married Charlie Assay (Japanese) in 1910 not exactly the done thing back then, so
I have got all Charlies information he arrived on the Yamashiro Maru in 1898.
Hannah had a daughter in 1907 Alma Daphne CRANE 1907/C10415 bdmq Alma married James Thomas GROSE in 1924 but no trace of her after that.
Hannah died early age 32, 1923 she is my husbands grandmother. Charlie remarried and lived until 1962.
So if there is anyone out there with information about Alma or any other family it will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Terri

Hi,
If you go the the Trove site, advanced, for indexed OZ newspapers, click on the appropriate Rockhampton Newspaper box & search for your names. I found a brief description of Hannah's sudden death. Best wishes, Gazania

Hi Gerry & Aussie,
Thanks for that, that's good, my mother in law has never even heard of Alma which is sad, obviously she may not have been a full blood relative of her father Alfred Oliver Assay but she was at least his half older sister.
So she may have been brought up by Hannahs mother Elizabeth as Hannah was disowned for marrying a Japanese man "oh the tangled webs we weave"
The article in the Rockhampton Bulletin about Hannahs death is very interesting and I will be going to Rockhampton shortly and can visit her grave.
Thank you for the help :)

Hi D.
How exciting, I just thought of Alma today out of the blue. Lets see if I have this right so your Grandmother was Elizabeth Crane (nee Brooks) and she is also my husbands Great great grandmother, is that right? Hannah is my husbands g grandmother and her son Alfred Oliver is my husbands grandfather.
Was Alma actually an Assay nobody knows from my husbands family?
Wow so Alma's children are my mother in laws cousins? and you are her Great Auntie or Uncle?
Thanks so much for replying perhaps we can send a personal message to each other and exchange email addresses so you can maybe fill in some gaps. I look forward to your reply.
Kind Regards
Teri ;D

Hello Teripat, where do i start.. i am the daughter of earlston charles assay, who was the brother of alma daphne. my grandmother was Hannah elizabeth Crane. I have read all your remarks and questions in the rootschat. this was sent to me by Dell Darrach. All i know about my Aunty Alma, was that she was a child born out of wedlock to my japanese grandfather( big NO NO in those days), however they did marry and had lots more children. i was led to believe that my dad was the eldest boy. well living that is , my grandparents had 2 more children older than my dad but they died.. When my dad was dying 13 years ago, i came from new zealand and spent his last 5 days alive with him in hospital. he kept calling to Alma and reaching to the ceiling. i can only think this was his sister who had come to help my dad with his journey beyond..i also did meet a cousin whose mum or grandmother was aunty Alma, he was living in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia..i can not remember his name..i hope you will stay in touch with me, and we can hopefully find out more of our family..
Janette Assay ( Walsham, married name)

Hi Dell, Janette and Merlin,
This is great I spoke with my mother in law June (nee Assay)
she doesn't have an email but she asked Janette if your Dad was known as "Boy" she said her father (dec 1956) had an older brother who was fondly known as "Boy"?
Janette do you have a brother? I think Junes brother and sister have been in contact with someone from Rocky and also Aunt Veras daughter. She was to Charlies second wife Winifred.
She knows Auntie Iris, Vera, Les?, she never knew of Auntie Alma, so Alma must have been raised by Elizabeth Crane/Burton (nee Brooks) and then there is Sidney and James who was stillborn.
So does anyone know what Hannah died from she was terribly young still aged 32?
Alfred served in the WW2 and there is some information about Charlie and Hannah being registered as Japanese for both World wars Charlie was not interned during the first but he was sent to a camp during the second. I thought it unusual that Hannah registered herself as Japanese along with her husband because she was English (she must have been some character)
We went to Rocky and we visited their graves Charlie, Hannah and Winifred are altogether and amazingly right next door is one of my ancestors a Mcmah.
Have you read about Hannahs death on the Trove website?
Sorry Dell the moderator removed your email address so you will have to send it via a Personal Message.
Warm Regards
Teri

hi all, well this certainly is hotting up, terri whose wife are you, because i think you are Gregs wife, hopefully i am right. June was married to my uncle Alfie who died on the way home from a funeral(if i am correct) and she has 3 children, 2 girls and greg, one of the girls names is Yvonne. I hope this makes sense to you. yes, my dad was known as "boy". and yes he was Alfie's older brother. then i think aunty Iris and aunty Dulcie and uncle Ronnie, then there was by a second marriage "Gertrude Winifred", gerti as known by my mum i can recall.they had, uncle lesley aunty Vera, i hopefully have not left anyone out.Aunty Vera's daughter is my cousin Donna. i knew that grandad got intered in the war, and i remember my mum saying that all his children were fighting for australia and my grandmother couldn't get any money to live on. Terrible times..at some stage Aunty Alma must of come and lived with the family, cause my dad knew her..he must have because he was calling her name when he was dying...i recall my mum saying that Hannah died of a heart attack, uncle Ronnie was 1 year old..very young..but she had been through 1 hell of a lot in her life..
how did the grave look, the last time i saw it10 years ago ,it was nice and clean, and 1 other thing my grandfather did, was to let a man who had no money when he died to be buried in his plot with Hannah, i don't know his name..
I look forward to this epic journey continuing,
Janette

Hi Janette,
I am married to Junes son Andrew, (June is Alfies oldest daughter) Greg is his uncle, and Alfs only son. Yvonne is Junes sister and at the moment she is overseas on holiday.
June had 6 children, Andrew is the oldest he had four brothers two whom died at a young age (childhood) and a sister Desleigh who passed away 1979 age 19.
June married Andy 1956. Andy died in 1976, only 2 grandchildren Yvonne married Graham 1960 and they have three children and nine grandchildren Uncle Greg is only four years older than my husband (his nephew) and he has one daughter who is 14/15 now. He was a late starter.
Did your Dad have a relationship with Grandmother Crane/Benson?
Well seeing as your Dad was known as "Boy" then his niece June knows him as a matter of fact Uncle Greg got a photo done up for June and because he was only 4 when Alf died it's actually your Dad not Alf they are very similar looking. I don't know whether Alf died on his way home from a funeral but I think I will PM you with my email as that would be best given that we are talking about rellies that are still kicking.
Talk soon
Teri
PS. Is Gary related to you?
