Title: Duncans/Stewarts/Robertsons in Glenisla & Lintrathen
Post by: Lyrical on Sunday 10 April 11 23:06 BST (UK)
Hi there,

I'm wondering if anyone has more information about or may be connected to the following Duncan, Stewart or Robertson families.

My great great grandfather, James Duncan (born c. 1812 in Glenisla) married Ann (born c. 1818, maiden name unknown) and their children were:
Janet (c. 1840, Lintrathen); John (c. 1847, Lintrathen); Alexander (c. 1851, Lintrathen)

Alexander Duncan married Jane Stewart (born 1854, Glenisla) and they had 3 sons:
Alexander (born 1877, Glenisla); James (c. 1879) and John (c.1884)

Jane Stewart's father was Donald Stewart (born c. 1806 in Glenisla) and her mother was Elspeth (nee Robertson, born c. 1815 in Kirkmichael).  The names of Jane's siblings were Margaret, Andrew, John, Donald, Alexander and Elspeth (their birth years ranging from 1841 to 1858).

I'm particularly trying to find out the names of James Duncan's parents.  I found one possibility on familysearch.org that lists a James Duncan christened on 8 June, 1811 in Glenisla with parents John Duncan and Elspeth Storrier.  However, not sure if there's any way to determine if this is the correct James Duncan.

I'd be very grateful for any help with this.  Thanks!  :)

Hi ev!

I agree, seems like it must have been a mistake that "Jane" was written down as James's spouse in that census.

Wow, I believe you've found Ann's birth name.  Two of her children are named Janet and Alexander so their names must have come down from her parents.  I'll add the Fentons to my family tree.  Thanks so much for your help!!  :)

I've checked for a record of death for James on familysearch.org but can't find anything, so not sure of what other options I have.  Does registering on Scotland's People site usually provide access to details (like parents names) on most birth/death certificates or do they often simply provide deceased name and date of birth/death?  Sorry, I'm a newbie at this, I'm in Canada so just learning about accessing records in Scotland.

Thanks again,
Lyrical

Hi Lyrical

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  There is the death of a James Duncan in Glenisla

The search criteria I used was birth year 1812 +/- 3years

His death would appear to be in 1901

If this is the one you are looking for it will give you his parents names and also whether his wife is still alive or not.

Yours Aye

Thank you so much, BruceL, you're amazing!!  From the details you mention on the certificate, it's the right James Duncan and now I have definite confirmation of his parents' names, plus his exact date of death.  Awesome!  I'll PM you for the certificate.

With much appreciation,
Lyrical

ev, you've worked your magic again.  Don't know why sometimes Storrier/Storror is spelled a bit differently, but I'm sure it's them.

Many thanks,  :)

Hello, I also have Duncans in Glenisla.  My 3rd Great Grandmother was Elizabeth "Betty" Duncan b. about 1753 she married David Milne b. abt. 1753.  Their granddaughter Betty or Betsy Milne had an illegitimate child with William Storrier in 1847 he was baptized in Fettercairn as James Milne Storrier.  Betsy went on to marry William Grant and had several of children. The Milnes and Storriers and Duncan it seems were connected and married into each others families. I am searching for the parents of Elizabeth Duncan b. 1753. There are several possibilities but I cannot definitely connect the dots! Elizabeth died at Cammock farm in Glenisla in 1821 and left a will which names the children. She was the widow of David Mill or Milne farmer at Westerton of Balintore.  If anyone has a connection I would be most grateful to hear. Many thanks Lynda

Hello Lynda!

I haven't checked back on this thread for over a couple of years now so I was surprised when I happened to look today and see your post.

As far as I know, I don't have an Elizabeth "Betty" Duncan b. about 1753 in my direct Duncan ancestry, although it's very possible that we do have some kind of connection through some branch of the Duncan line.

My GGG Grandfather was John Duncan who I believe was born in Glenisla in 1755 (I'm positive of his name being John Duncan, though can't be 100% positive of his birth year). From the research I've done it appears John Duncan's father was mostly likely Andrew Duncan, birth year unknown.

My GGG Grandfather John Duncan had the following siblings I am aware of:

Thomas – christened 24 January, 1742 at Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
Ann – christened 21 April, 1743 at Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
William – christened 25 February, 1746 at Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
Andrew – christened 3 January, 1748 at Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
Margaret – christened 8 April, 1753 at Glenisla, Angus, Scotland

I'm wondering if your Elizabeth "Betty" Duncan b. about 1753, might be a cousin of my GGG Grandfather John Duncan. That's just a guess of course. Have you been able to go back further and find out the first name of her father yet?
