I'm looking for information on James Coffey from Co. Kerry. He was born approx 1857 and joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) in 1877.
According to the Archivist at the Garda Museum, he was from Glencar, Co. Kerry.
His father, a farmer, was Michael Coffey.
James married Norah Shea, also from Kerry, at St. Andrew's Church Westland Row Dublin, in 1884.
I have a copy of the marriage details. It says that Norah Shea's father Timothy, was also a farmer.
I have their Dublin details from the 1901/11 censuses.
Thanks,
Gerry.

Parish records for GLENBEIGH/GLENCAR area of Co.Kerry are available on www.irishgenealogy.ie you can filter by that Parish alone.
I could not find any James Coffey with father Michael around 1857 for Glencar parish but might be a chance his baptism did not survive there seems to be three or four families with a father Michael Coffey for the correct time period
1. Michael Coffey and Mary Mangan
2. Michael Coffey and Johanna Foley
3. Michael Coffey and Johanna O'Sullivan.
Is there any hints from his left in Dublin to relate him back to the correct Michael Coffey perhaps his own children's names may give a hint.

Thanks for replying and searching, Castlemcauliffe.
In Dublin, their first born was a girl called Mary. But I've found a Norah Shea in Kerry, and her mother is Mary too. So I don't know what James's mother's name was. ....can't be sure. Not sure of Norah's mother's name either.
There doesn't appear to be a Johanna Coffey in Dublin.

You're very good for trying to help me; I appreciate it very much.
I never heard of any other brothers joining the DMP. The stories I've heard seem to relate to the Shea side of the family.
The only thing is, which could be a coincidence, the 'reference' James Coffey supplied to join the police came from a parish priest called Reverend Mangan, presumably from Glencar parish.
James and Norah married in Dublin in 1884. Cert says both the fathers were farmers. There is a Michael Coffey on Griffith's Valuation, but it says Letter West, Kerry.
So, I'm stumped.
Gerry.

Your name came up on this site when I googled James Coffey DMP. I have some documents (found in no 6 Fumbally Lane 30 yrs ago) that may be of interest to Gerry, regarding James & Nora Coffey. I live in Dublin. How do we make contact?

Hi Castlemcaulife.
Happy New Year to you and yours.
I had a look at the original copy of James Coffey's marriage to Norah Shea.
It gave a little more detail than the shortened version I got from the GRO.
Michael Coffey's wife's name is Johanna.
Now, from what you found, I have a Foley or O'Sullivan to choose from.
Norah Shea's mother was Mary...still no idea of her maiden name.
Slán,
Gerry.

Hi Annie.
I hope you are keeping well.
I have been very ill since we last 'spoke' culminating in open heart surgery in November last year. The op was successful but I suffered renal failure post op and spent 25 days in ICU on a dialysis machine.
In January of this year my wife Norma was diagnosed with cancer and has been in and out of hospital 11 times this year. She is due in again in the next week and may be in over the Christmas.
I'm sorry I haven't been in touch with you, but with all that has been happening, I didn't even turn on the Pc. When I did turn it on there was a virus on it which prevented me from accessing anything. I had it removed the other day and am trying to do catch up on everything.
Apologies again.
Regards,
Gerry.
PS. Get any further with Zion Mills?

Hi, do you still have this notebook? My great grandad Coffey was a pc married to Norah, in Dublin, Malpas Terrace/Place, I have a formal picture of the 2 of them, he has handlebar moustache and wearing medals. Would love to see this if possible? Thanks
-
Yes I have it, the Dublin Police Museum also have a digital version. they might like a photo as well as me? I got very fond of this pair - she wrote a lively poem - the manuscript is digital on another computer. I will look up and email you. great to share it - burning a hole through my shelf for years!
-
Hi, I will do x am on hols at the moment will be back next Sunday, can you do me your email and I will send the picture to you? Or I can send you mine? Do you know how we could access the digital version I know all my family would be thrilled to see it, thanks, Donna
-
Hi Donna I am Annie, I'll send it, when I have your email address - xxxxxxx. I'm in Dublin. I already sent it to one of your family in or around Birmingham I believe, a few years ago.
-
Hi Annie, my details are xxxxxx, I still have a sister and cousins in Dublin, but wasn’t aware of extended family in Birmingham, so that is really interesting, will email that pic on Sunday/Monday when I’m back, along with a pic of their son, my grandad, who was a merchant seaman, and his son,my dad, if you want? Best wishes, Donna

I have removed your email addresses because this is not a safe practice on the internet, never has been. When you publish your email address on websites this is how spammers pick up on your details and spam you - you change email address we then get further family trying to contact and then we can not any more because you have changed email address!
Please be safe
