Hi,
I hope someone out there can help me. I am looking for descendants of Thomas Erskine married Catherine Thompson in Co. Antrim in 1828. They had a family of seven children who were all christened at Ballyeaston,
Co. Antrim
John Erskine born 2nd September 1829
Jane Erskine born 16th May 1830
Thomas Erskine born 29th July 1833
Robert Erskine born 21st January 1836
Janet Erskine (my great grandmother) born 4th December 1838
James Erskine born 22nd September 1845
Alexander Erskine born 1st July 1847
Has anyone information about the ancestors of Thomas Erskine and Catherine Thompson or the descendents of any of their six children. Many thanks, Christopher

Hi Chris
Are your Eskine's related back to the Sherrards by any chance. Charles was 92 when he died in 1839
-
Hi Stevenson, I do not know. At the minute I cannot see the connection.
1861 Janet Erskine married Andrew Alexander at Ballyeaston. Janet was born in 1838

Hei,
Well now I know a little bit about John and I know about Janet.
I wonder what happened to the rest of the family ?
I'd better make a note to discover more about John.
I agree it's cool to meet new relations, no matter how far removed

Hi Chris
Found Thomas and Catherine buried at Rashee new burial ground along with Robert E and Alexander Polldock. There are lots of Erskine graves in the same area.
An Agnes Service Erskine looks interesting she died in 1934 aged 93
You should go up and take a look and have a wee meal at the five corners.

Hi Christopher
Catherine Thompson Erskine died 20/11/1883 age 81
husb Thomas Erskine died 10/8/1883 age 82
Robert Erskine died 7/9/1880 age 43
Alexander Pollock Erskine died 22/11/1929 age 82
Also a number of others at Rashee - Robert/Mary/Thomas/Annie/Nessie etc etc
I can also recommend The Five Corners - wonderful Ulster Fry there!!!
-
Thanks Saz and Steve,
I know there was a Pollock Alexander, a cousin of my mother.
I had been under the impression that an Alexander had married a Pollock but from your information it looks as though the Erskine name may be the link. Would you suggest that I have a look at records of Second Ballyeaston which was originally formed in 1767 as Rashee Congregation ?
Best Wishes, Chris

Hi Unc
No idea - just found headstones in our travels and knew you were looking for Erskines. There is also an Erskine one at Doagh might be worth a look - not too clear as my camera picked up reflection of sun on shiny surface!
Anything is always worth a look I think.
Don't forget to keep your eyes open for our Sarah Twig in your travels please.
We found her granddaughter, Lizzie Mayne, and husband Sammy buried at Rashee - last place we would have thought to look.
I understand Mossley Mill hold records of who is buried where in Newtownabbey - don't think that would apply to church graveyards tho.
Trust me on the Ulster Fry - absolutely wonderful!! ;D

hi Chris
I would try Ballyeaston as Stevenson and Moore graves I found In Donegore are for the families that lived in and around Ballyeaston so it would not hurt to have a look at them.

There is a book called His House on the Hill, A History of First Ballyeaston Presbyterian Church 1676 - 2004 by Jim Wilson, B.A.
There is a list of members from 1813 in the back of the book, and on page 281 I find two Erskine families listed in succession, of Donomoy:
Robert Erskine 46 Farmer
Jane, wife 36
Elisabeth 13
Thomas 11
John 9
James 7
Sara 5
Robert 1
Thomas Erskine 73 Farmer
Jennet, wife 74
Mary 42
Jennet 40
Thomas Irvin 15 Adopted
I was just in Ballyeaston last week, where I visited the Old Rashee Cemetery near the Four Corners pub, and I remember seeing Erskines there. The Old Rashee Cemetery is very near to, but not part of, the new Rashee Cemetery.
Hope this helps.

Chris:
This is my first reply to a message so I hope it flows through okay.
I was looking at Ballyeaston messages and came across yours. DJ gave you the two Erskine families from the 1813 list in the Ballyeaston Presbyterian Church record. There is another one which is most likely the ancestors record for your Catherine Thompson.
Townland of Rashee
Andrew Thompson age 53 Occupation Weaver
James age 26
Mary age 23
Jenny age 21
Easter age 18
Robert age 15
Catherine age 11
Elisabeth age 7
Hope this is helpful,
Mike

Many thanks Mike,
Great to hear from you .That information looks good.

Chris
found this, not sure if it is any help
William Erskine was a excutor to the will of Mary McCracken in 1866 (the sister of Henry Joy McCracken)..........says he was a master mariner.

Uncle Chris
Was looking for others and came across Asreskine in the 1700's in Antrim......I know the spellings are different....they had conections to the Navy...
Does this help
Steve
-
Thanks for the message Steve. I have not get to 1700s. I think many of ours were on merchant ships rather than Navy ships but the brother of Mother's friend Margaret, Lt Commander J.G.M. Erskine lost his life on HMS Hood so the guy you found may be an ancestor of that Erskine family.

Guys,
I realise this may not be a link - but I am looking for my McQuitty ancestors and I'm getting close to proving that they originated at Ballyeaston / Rashee. One of them appears to have married a Betty Thomspon. His name was Robert.
Any chance of the earlier person looking up any links in that book on Ballyeaston to find any McQuittys living in the area ?
Thanks...
Maurice
-
Maurice:
There is only 1 McQuitty in the Ballyeaston census of 1813. He was John McQuitty age 32 and was listed as a weaver. His wife was Elisabeth age 34. They hav one child Jane age 1.
They lived in the townland of Rashee.
There are no Thompsons listed.
Mike
-
Thanks very much !!
I have another reference to John McQuitty and Elizabeth (nee Saunderson) and the Christening of Isabella McQuitty in 1925 in Ballyeaston - so I presume Jane was an earlier child and this is the same family.

Hi Maurice
There are Three Thompson's mentioned in the 1813 Congregational List but none having a daughter Betty.
Do you any time frame for Robert marrying Betty Thompson.
The 1813 Census is of First Ballyeaston Presbyterian Church. There is also Second Ballyeston Presbyterian and Ballyeaston Church of Ireland.
John
-
Hi Maurice:
John is certainly correct. Sorry, I missed the name in the index. However Betty is also used for Elizabeth and there was an Elisabeth listed for one of the Thompsons. The listing is as follows:
Andrew Thompson Age 53 Occupation Weaver
No wife is listed. Those listed under his were
James age 26
Mary age 23
Jenny age 21
Easter age 18
Robert age 15
Catherine age 11
Elisabeth age 7

Maurice:
These Thompsoms were from the towland of Rashee.

Guys,
Thanks for your help. Another little chink of information in the jigsaw that will help me when I visit Ballyeaston this summer.
I only have the christianing of Isabella in 1925 to John and Betty - but that would fit as the 7 year old Elizabeth would have been 19 by then.
Regards...
Maurice
