I found my Grand Uncle, Henry James CROSSAN, arriving in Quebec Aug 11, 1923, single. I found his name on passenger list of Montclare returning to England 15 Dec 1923. However I have also found a marriage to Josephine Spencer, in Liverpool England (where he lived before and after this trip) dated Jul-Sep 1923 and a child, Harry, born in same period to Josepine Spencer and Henry James Crossan.
On the passenger list for the return trip there is a small 'x' beside the place of embarkation. Does anyone know what the 'x' indicates, eg - Was he a missing passenger? I believe he may have taken an earlier passage back to UK, but I can't find him on the usual lists. Does anyone know if there are records of people entering England on merchant ships or other vessels which may not usually have taken passengers?
I realize that there could be more than one Henry James Crossan in Liverpool, and I could order the vital records to find out, but I would like to be more sure, ie find an earlier return trip, before I buy the records.
Any other ideas would be greatfully received
Thanks
Carol

Hi, Carol, and welcome to Rootschat!
Normally for those who were booked to sail but didn't board, a line was drawn through the name.
If you have access to the full passenger list, not just the page that Henry is on, you could check if there are others with the same x.
It is also possible, particularly if he was one in a long list of men and the person making up the list was just dittoing down carelessly, that there was a mistake on the first passenger list and he was married before heading to Canada in August.

just looked through immigration and emmigration records an ancestry and find my past and the only definate record is the one which is posted here i,m more inclined to think that he was a merchant seaman that way he could make trips back and forth but not be picked up in the normal way , the biggest problem if he was a merchant seaman is that no seamens records are on line it is possible that either liverpool archives may have some records or be able to point you in the right direction or he could be in the records at southampton records office they have a central index of merchant seamen covering the dates of of hj crossan,s working life i would say or at least most of it . they will do searches for men but at a cost of£15 which will give you up to 3 names of which your looking for .it may be worth e mailing them to find out more about what they hold for merchant navy records the e mail address is city.archives[-- at --]southampton.gov.uk

Thank you all for your useful suggestions and for following up with searches. It is good to know I didn't miss an obvious search result.
I will follow your idea Trevor and contact Liverpool. On the outgoing papers he called himself a farmer - so perhaps he was whatever was expedient at the time!
Anyway, thanks again for the valuable help.

Hi Carol
I have been searching a Henry Crossan, b 1859 Kirkcudbrightshire, and have been "stalking" your various posts across the internet (purely from a research perspective, of course.) I have tried emailing a number of your old email addresses, without any success, I might add, but hopefully we can make contact here.
The Henry Crossan I seek may or may not be your relation but there is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest some connection.
If you would like to email me at (*) I'll tell you my story. I am keen to known whether your Henry is the person I seek, and if so, really interested to learn of his history.
Cheers
Chris

Just in case someone else is interested, Henry married Josephine Spencer in July 1923. He left for Canada in August to work as a farmer in Winnipeg. A week later his son Harry was born in Liverpool. Henry returned to Liverpool in late November, but to his mother's home. He and his wife were divorced and Josephine remarried. My original question is now answered, but now there are many more questions to sort out... many thanks for all the help. Carol47

Hi carol
Just read your post reference Henry James crossan. As you appear to have discovered he died in Sydney in 1972,however, even though his death certificate says he was never married, he did marry my grandmother Jane Patterson in Sydney in sept 1925 and our mother was born the following January. My mother and grandmother left Sydney for England in 1935 and our grandfather was supposed to follow but never did. He corresponded with our mother for some time until the war intervened and nothing further was heard from him. Do you have any information after his family left for England and also which brother are you connected to in the family tree?
We look forward to hearing from you. Ann

Hi Ann
What a great message on New Years Day. Yes - I did believe that Henry James died without marrying again. To know that he did have family and his descendants are alive and well is great news.
As you probably know, James had three brothers, James Coole, William and Alexander Sinclair. As far as I know there were no other siblings. Do you know of any others?
James Coole Crossan was my mother's father. When I remember how, I will send you a private message with my email. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Carol,
My sister and I were really thrilled to hear from you so soon, especially as it is a while since you last left a message on rootschat, also that we have found a relation on our mother' s side of the family which is wonderful news.
We would be interested to know if you have found out anything about Harry's son, Harry, who was born to Josephine Spencer, or perhaps point us in the right direction to find this information.
We look forward to hearing from you again.
With best wishes, Ann

Hi again. I tried to send PM with my email. I can't post it here. Josephine's son Harry born 1923. Married Marjorie Mills in 1945 (FreeBMD). As far as I can tell, they had 3 children - Susan, Jeffrey and Margery. Susan died at birth. Jeffrey married and had at least one child, Gary. Marjory married Peter Clowney and they had at least 3 children. This information all came from FreeBMD. I have not verified it elsewhere. I have written to the assumed families both by email and snail mail, but no one has ever replied. I believe they still live in the Liverpool / Bootle area. If you ever make contact, I would love to hear about them.
Can you share more of your grandmother's and mother's story? and do you have any photographs of your grandparents. There was a history women being "left" by the men in this Crossan line. How sad. There is such a lot of information about the earlier Crossans that I will share with you. I don't know i this will work or not, but for alternate contact we could try: My name is Hinchliff and on google.com I use the first 5 letters plus c as my address. I am also on facebook.
Look forward to hearing from you again
Carol
