Hey everyone :)
I'm in the thinking process here at the moment and just wondering if anyone would be interested in the possibility of coming to a meet in Dublin in Mid-October. As its my first time doing this, so would like to keep it to a small this time around. Was thinking, maybe arrive on a Friday evening and have dinner somewhere...then on the Saturday, head to the National Library of Ireland for research stuff. Just a thought of what to do....
I know its early putting this up but thought I would get an idea of who would like to go and would love to meet you all too ;D
Annie
-
Hi Annie
Sounds good BUT not sure re the National Library as is only Catholic records there and I kinda need both tho wouldn't want to drag everyone out to Churchdown - having been before.
Tho the library has an excellent geneaology centre have to say. Also woirth pointing out to use the National Library records you need a reader card so peeps who don't have one need to bring passport sized photos for getting one and getting in.
Put us down for 3 possibles!
Ann :D
-
Annie,
I might be interested. Put me down for 1 place.
Elwyn
-
Cool beans....
Think it would be worth putting up the National Library of Ireland website for peeps so they know what to expect...haven't been up there myself so going to take a look too lol. http://www.nli.ie/en/intro/how-to-find-us.aspx. As Ann stated, we would all have to get readers tickets so the information is there about it all..cheers Ann
Annie
-
a couple of details to add to the topic - to view RC parish records, tithe records, or newspapers you only need what's called a newspaper pass. You just collect this at reception - no signing on required
The NLI is only open on Saturdays up to 1 o'clock, so maybe people with a few items to check would be better starting their searches on a weekday.
The RCB Library is only open Monday to Friday
Shane
-
Thanks for throwing that up Shane...
Maybe we should meet in Dublin on Friday lunchtime and go down then and have dinner in the evening and then back to the NLI on Saturday morning??
Annie
-
I presume we Dubliners would be welcome to join in the fun?!
count me in if I'm around, though there's a move afoot in the family for a trip away in October.
edit: the Gilbert Library (with a lot of Dublin stuff) is open on Sat afternoons, except Bank Holiday weekends
eadaoin
-
Eadaoin..I'm from Tipperary lol so ur definitely counted in lol.
-
Hi Annie,
Def would be interested in doing this ..and seeing as how I`m in Laois u could pick me up on the way up ;)
-
Lol Pat.. name down.
-
While a meet-up for dinner and a chat is quite a good idea, I'm not sure the NLI could cater for a large number of people arriving together to use the microfilm viewers. It can be quite busy there especially at week-ends :-\
-
Oopss...didn't think that I would have to book people in for it :o Maybe if half go on the Friday and the other half go on the Saturday, would that work? ;D
-
Sounds a great idea to have a chance to talk to interested others!
I'll watch the site for progress as I am already Dublin based
-
Certainly in for the meal and chat bit. Another point is that the NLI are now doing the passport photos for free as part of getting your reader ticket, so you don't need the trouble of getting them before hand.
-
No you don't book for the microfilm readers, but just that there may not be sufficient free machines if a large number of people arrive together & people could find themselves hanging around (unless there were books or the like that they wished to consult). The parish records & old newspapers are all on microfilm. However, there are a number of very interesting genealogical reference books in the genealogy room.
Just being a bit of a devil's advocate here I guess
-
Cheers Purpeller and Agho...will just see how many actually really want to go before the end of September and try and organise something around that such as booking tables for dinner etc...
-
Once the date is settled, I would love to come along if I can get a few days off work.
-
Count me in also for meal and chat!
My favourite place is the Gilbert Library on Pearse Street. Opens all day on a Saturday and can park in area also. It is close to Westland Row train/dart station. It does not close over lunch and has nice cafe with decent coffee/soup. Yes need a readers card for the research room and this is issued on production of some photo ID.
Perhaps Friday/Saturday evening and let us do our own thing with the day?
With fond memories of Christopher a formidable Rootschatter who lives on in the archives of this website.
-
Perhaps you would like to coincide the meetup with the Back To Our Past exhibition in the RDS. It's on from 21st to 23rd of October, 2011.
http://www.backtoourpast.com/mysitecaddy/site3/index.htm
-
Count me in :)
Good to hang it on some specific date even if none of us actually make it to RDS event!
All best to fellow Irish rootschatters and look forward to meet!
-
Would definitely be interested Annie ...keep me posted re. dates etc. ;D

I've marked this on my calendar provisionally

Hopefully I'll be able to make it too. :)
-
Hi everyone....
Ok, I've three weekends that I've picked and can work around. 21st - 23rd October coincides with the Back to Our Past Expo in the RDS in Dublin - thanks to Ibud for telling us that. 28th, 29th and 30th October and 4th, 5th and 6th November - these two weekends coincide with my college mid term and would work for me lol.
So what do peeps think?
Annie x
-
I'll go with the 21st - 23rd.
Elwyn
-
Cheers Elwyn...have noted that down - would like to go to that Expo too, would be an interesting thing to do on the Friday or Saturday.
-
October 21st - 23rd weekend sounds best to me
Hate to give anyone a reason not to come to Dublin ;D but the following weekend is the October Bank Holiday and the Dublin City Marathon is on the Monday and a Breakfast race is ran in the city centre on the Sunday. The city can be busier than expected for that time of year, accommodation can be more expensive (being a public holiday and groups visiting from abroad) and on the Monday roads will be closed across the city.
Of course if we all start training now we could enter!!!!!
-
Ok..modifying this again...I was thinking that it would be best if we go with the 21st -23rd October to tie in with the Expo if anyone wants to go as would be a very interesting thing to see. Is this date ok with everyone?
Oohh never knew the Marathon was on :-\
Also because the NLI opens until 12.45pm on the Saturday - I think it would be an idea to arrive at our accommodation early enough on the Friday and go to the NLI or whereever other peeps want to go for research during the day on Friday and then meet up for some dinner that evening somewhere. Then on the Saturday, we could go to that Expo or whatever peeps want to do at their leisure, rather than just doing one thing. I for one would love to go an explore some of Dublin and see places that I've not seen yet...
Annie
-
weekend 21-23 Oct looks fine at the minute.
I know I'm likely to be going to visit daughter sometime Oct - will try to head her off to an earlier date!
eadaoin
-
Cool Eadaoin...would be great to see you there
-
At the moment october looks good for me
-
Would love to join you all...
but I'm based in Connemara with two small children...not quite up for over night weekends yet :(
Would love to hear how it goes though :)
-
Hi everyone....
Trying to email everyone is like trying to draw blood from a stone cause have to wait a certain amount of time between emails, which is annoying. Just wondering who is still interested in going to Dublin for the meet...think the 21-23 October would be the best time for it in my opinion.
Regards,
Annie
-
I am Dublin based and still on
May I suggest that you start a new poll - to let it count numbers
-
I'm still in there for that date
eadaoin
-
Am still interested too :)
-
October Week-end sounds great.
Would there be room for a Mayo Woman......or two!!!! :D
There are lots of Hotels around Ballsbridge. (near the Back to the Past Expo)
-
HI
I would hope to be at the Back to the Past Expo on the Saturday so would be great to meet up. Went last year and it was great. Worth while day trip from Belfast.
John
-
I might be able to come, so I will add my name.
Karen
-
Hellooooo everyone :D
Ok so...I'm busy compiling a list of hotels at the moment - the few I have already are situated in the city centre area of Dublin itself but as the Back to Our Past Expo is based in the Ballsbridge area, I think I should have a look at hotels out there too...and we can always get buses or the Luas around the place...there's day passes for both I think.
So far, I have 14 on my list of who wants to go. Is that still the case lol?
Annie ;D
-
I'm still interested - living in Dublin, so can do a bit of guiding

best to look at hotels etc around Nassau st, WestlandRow area, (south city anyway) as National Archive, Pearse St Library are there, and National Archive not too far away
..and we can always get buses or the Luas around the place...there's day passes for both I think.
and the DART too, though combined tickets might be a bit dear
Bus/Luas tickets - don't think we'll need the Luas for the genealogy stuff ... but see

Hi Annie
+3 here but need to know if dates firm so we can book crossing

Ann :D

Hi everyone.... :D
The 21st - 23rd October is looking like the best time to go and think that we should stick with it. I am currently putting together a list of hotels and bed and breakfasts so people can pick and chose where they want to stay in Dublin.
I know that the NLI is closed a half day on Saturday, and only holds Catholic Church records so some may want to head to other places to research. The Back to Our Past Expo is also on the same weekend, so that would be interesting to go and see.
If anyone has any ideas of what else we could do that weekend..would be great cause this is my first time organising an Irish meet and would love to get some insight into what is expected.

Some of us that travel may be able to meet on the Friday evening or the Saturday after the show.
It would be nice to share notes, and ideas.
These are the opening time for the LDS research
LDS Family History Centre - Glasnevin, Dublin

I've never been there, has anyone else?

Hi all
Sadly I am going to have to scratch from this one. My father is very ill and we've Just been told only a few weeks left so I really can't make any firm commitments at present.

Annie
Still interested I will be in Dublin that weekend to meet up; I won't need accommodation. I just need to arrange the kids closed to the time.

Hey everyone ;D
Ann...so sorry to hear about your dad..thoughts are with you.
I've some bad news too...I am not going to be able to make the Dublin meet unfortunately :( due to major college commitments this year - my final year and have a thesis to complete and also a 7,000 word work placement portfolio.
However, Eadaoin has kindly agreed to take over the planning of the meet ;D Thank you Eadaoin - I really appreciate it.
So, follow Eadaoin's posts from now on lol....so sad that I can't make it :'( but such is life

As Annie says, I've agreed to take over the organising of the Meet. Annie has told me what she's done so far.
In a couple of weeks I'll ask people when they're likely to arrive in Dublin, etc.
In the meantime, I'm calling in to a few eating-places in the South City, and I'll publish details later .. some of them don't give individual bills, so might not be as suitable?
All you other Dubs, any suggestions for good eateries for the evening? I'll check them out if poss.
regards eadaoin
-
Hello everyone!
I thought I should get in contact with you all again - it's less than 4 weeks until our meet!
Maybe everyone would PM me to give me an idea of who is still interested - and when you're likely to arrive, and leave (there's no point in organising Friday, if everyone is coming only on Saturday).
In the next couple of days I'll post a rough timetable, and details(opening hours, etc) of the various Archives/Libraries.
Reminder: don't forget to get your tickets for "Back to Our Past" - it's halfprice if you get them early
regards eadaoin
-

Rootschat Meet ... PM ... 16 Oct 2011
just to bring everybody up-to-date. I'm still waiting to hear from 5 people.
It looks as if there may be 7 of us meeting in Dublin 21-23 October, all going well - maybe not all at the same time.
I don't think anyone is coming from abroad, and ?most of us are Dublin based, so there probably won't be a need for conducted tours (PM me if I'm wrong!)
eadaoin, shanew147, myluck!, Purpeller, annieoburns, ibud, DympJoyce
here's how I see things at the moment - please let me know if I've got something wrong.
I'm thinking the"Davenport Hotel" for the evenings - it's convenient to the DART and has a good choice of barfood ..
Tapas 6 euro, Mains 11-16 euro
Friday afternoon I'll be in Pearse St Library
- meet at Davenport 6.30pm - at present it's myself and ibud - all others welcome
Saturday "Back to Our Past" - I'll probably go there before lunch, and stay most of the afternoon. This may be where most of us will meet up (shane and Purpeller ... and others) ... will we meet near the entrance about 2pm??
meet Davenport 7pm ish for dinner/drink/whatever - at present it's myself and DympJoyce - all welcome.
I've made myself a nice badge (3 inches / 8 cm) of a tree which I'll try to photo attach.
Have I forgotten anything?
regards eadaoin
-
Love the badge
At the moment I see me meeting up on Friday and hopefully Saturday during the day; Saturday night is a slight dilemma at the moment!!
-
I'll pop by at 2pm near the door - I'll already be there by that stage so inside. I'll make a badge too. Not sure what it will look like yet - I'm not as organised as Eadaoin but it'll be purple.
-
I've added some examples for badges here:
Topic: Lapel Badges
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70539.0.html
Enjoy the meet :)

I'm in hospital at the moment and I don't think I'll get to the meet after all, sorry. Hope it goes well

RoryT
sorry we won't see you - hope you'll soon be better

-
Hi
Thanks for your kind messages. Am really sorry we can't be there.
My wee dad sadly passed last Friday so am in Scotland for the funeral.
I hope everyone has a fantastic day and next time we'll be there as still more than plenty research to do!
Best Wishes
Ann :)
-
Oh Ann...I am so so sorry to hear about your dad. Thoughts and prayers are with you
-
Ann
I'm so sorry about your Dad. Even when you've been expecting it, it's still a shock when it happens, as I know.
regards eadaoin
-
Ann, so sorry to hear about your dad. May he rest in peace.
And RoryT, I hope you'll be better soon.
Eadaoin, I've PMed you but just in case you don't see it....I'm sorry, I won't be able to make it into town this evening after all. I hope to be at BTOP on Sat around lunchtime & will keep an eye out for you all.
Apologies again!!!!
Regards, Lbud
-
I should be there for Saturday lunchtime too but hope to get to meet with family in Dublin when the event is finished.
Here hoping there's no frost in the morning, will leave Mayo in plenty of time. :)
-
eadaoin it could well be just dinner for two! I am still ok for tonight and will be at the Davenport - I am going to PM my mobile no incase of changes
-
Well, we had our Meet, even if we didn't all manage to get together.
First of all a big thank to to anniedwyer84 for starting the ball rolling, and beginning the organization. I hope your thesis goes well, and that you'll meet us at the next one.
- myluck! and I had dinner on Friday night, and chatted for ages.
- On Saturday at Back to our Past in the RDS, I met Purpeller and annieoburns, and PastMagic bumped into us, and we yarned for ages over coffee. We failed to link up with DympJoyce who was there ... maybe others were too ..
annieoburns and I hoped to meet again that evening, but that didn't work out.
Here's a few recommendations for whoever organizes the next Meet!
1. I should have given everyone my mobile number.
2. maybe I should have been a bit more precise about meeting places.
3. I probably should have had a big notice fixed to a pole (you know, like the tour guides who hold up their big umbrellas, followed by a gaggle of tourists) ... not that Rootschatters are EVER a gaggle ...?
I really enjoyed my weekend - thanks for the company, and the interesting anecdotes - I now feel most of my ancestors were quite normal people! (joking, partly)
regards eadaoin
-
It was lovely meeting eadaoin on Friday night - and we did chat for ages!!!!
Received call on Friday that a cousin had died and the funeral was already arranged for Saturday: I never made it to the RDS
Great idea Ann - thanks - here's to the next time!
-
Thank you for all the effort that went into getting this off the ground!
Look forward to the next one. I really did enjoy the conversation, which ranged over several decades and several continents!
Regards,
PM
PS, especially the Earlsfort Terrace bits, and why jeans were not allowed in your time there...
