After a long break, I'm back on the trail of my Shields ancestors!
Is there anyone who visits the Carlisle Records Office that can look up a marriage at St. Andrews parish church in Penrith? I've found a reference PR110/1
I'm looking for a marriage between Hugh Shields and Ann O'Neil in 1823/24. Their first child, Elizabeth Shields was born 1824/25 in Penrith.
Many thanks,
Seattle

It depends what you are hoping to find from the entry, no address, occupation or fathers name are rarely given pre 1837 only couples names, status, date, whether of the parish and witnesses.

Hi,
I was hoping the witnesses might give me a new clue to follow. A long shot, I know, but I've hit a real dead end.

Hi
Do you have them on any census please?

The IGI baptisms batch (C003022) for Penrith (St Andrew) has the following numbers of baptisms
1824 176
1825 189
1826 178
1827 158
1828 180
How many SHIELDSs? - None.
Likewise, there were apparently no SHIELDS marriages. Perhaps they were a different denomination.

Hi Geoff
They could be a different denomination Geoff. I have Shields in my tree from Allendale and about and they were Quakers.

Hi Geoff and Evie,
I found Hugh, Ann, Elizabeth, Joseph Hugh, John and Sarah in 1841 in Thurnham, Lancaster, Lancashire. The 1851 census gave me their places of birth.
Elizabeth (1825) and Joseph (1827) were born in Penrith.
John (1832) was born in Wigton and Sarah (1838) in Thurnham, Lancaster.
Strangely, Hugh (1782) was born in America and Ann (1796) in Ireland. That's where the trail goes cold! Ireland is impossible, because I don't even know which county to start looking in. As the American revolution was going on about the time of Hugh's birth, the records don't give much in the way of details. Only the head of household and number of people in the family. Of course, I can't find any Hugh.
I'll check the IGI batches again, Geoff, for other denominations. I think I've checked them before, but maybe I missed something.
Many thanks to both of you for your help.
Sharon
