I have a birth/baptism entry from Colmonell 15 Mar 1778 for Sarah PARKER OPR births 582/0010 0047
The entry gives her birthplace as LAGLARTRY (or similar spelling)
I can't find this place. Can someone help out please
Sarah's mother's maiden name is AFLECK. Is this a common surname in the area?
thanks

Hi
It's inland (to the east) of Colmonell. On this map it's Liglartrie

Hi Barbatalice
if you are still following this up I'd be interested to share info. I'm descended from Agnes Afleck of Kildonan, Colmonell. She didn't have a sister Sarah so it's likely they were cousins.

I certainly am interested
When was your Agnes born?
This is what I have so far that relates to AFLECK:
Sarah daughter of Robert PARKER & Margaret AFLECK in Laglartry born March 12th & baptized 10th 1778 OPR Births 582/ 0010 0047 Colmonell
John son of Robert PARKER & Margaret AFLECK in Laglartry was born June 9th & baptized June 16th 1780 OPR Births 582 00 0010 0052 Colmonell
On the same page as John PARKER's birth is an AFLECK birth which is not in the line I am following:
Marion daughter of William AFLECK & Marion Mc...... in Ba...... was born June 13th & baptized June 15th 1780
I have a marriage for John PARKER and Margaret AFLECK:
Banns of marriage 1773
PARKER & AUCHINLECK Robert PARKER servant with Malcolm McGLASHAN? at Dailly & Margaret AUCHINLECK in parish of Colmonel gave in their names in order to Marriage Febry 13th were three times proclaimed & married Ferbry the 21st OPR Marriages 585 /00 0010 0464 Dailly

Sorry the marriage in 1773 is for Robert PARKER not John PARKER
Also I didn't mention that AFLECK & AUCHINLECK are spellings of the same surname - not sure how this could be but I read that they are pronounced the same way in South Ayrshire

Hi Barb
I am getting the feeling there is not a connection after all. The fact that they married in Dailly and not Colmonell suggests to me that Margaret came from Dailly and was in service somewhere in the Colmonell parish.
It's possible that Auchinleck and Afleck were pronouned in a similar way in the eighteenth century but somehow I doubt it. I think we might be dealing with separate families. It's possible that having moved to Colmonell the person keeping the records assumed her name was Afleck as it was a common name in the parish (or perhaps he was deaf!)
You are welcome to what I have. I'm descended from the line you are not researching.

http://barrhill.tribalpages.com is my website - you'll find all I have on the Aflecks here. Let me know if it's of help to you.

Hi Catherine,
I just had a look at your family tree page and I think that we might be related. I'm from Afleck, McGill, McMillan, Jessimer branch. It seems that your tree does not have Andrew McMillan (the youngest) on it and that is where my branch comes from. I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Andrew so I know his mother and father from that.
Please contact me so we can discuss further.
