Post by: tommolad on Wednesday 06 April 11 10:39 BST (UK)
I am researching my relatives and am looking for information about Thomas Posgate b. 1770 in Whitby. Specifically I am interested in his siblings, children and ancestors. Thomas may also be recorded under the name Postgate.
Any information would be gratefully received.

There are Postgate Children here but there seems to be a generation missing as these are born too late for your Thomas but most likely the Grandchildren of Thomas and Ann:

Thomas b. Whitby 1840
Rachael b. Whitby 1851..Twin
Robert  b.   Whitby 1851..twin

Parents Thomas and Ann

Have a look here:

I saw that one too Mc...a difficult family to trace under Posgate/Postgate....I wouldn't be surprised if the surname later became Poskitt.

Have a look at 'Old Bailey Online'search:  Thomas Posgate.  His marriage to Eliza Joel and baptisms of most of the children are on Medway Cityark Online PRs - Gravesend.

If you are a cricket enthusiast - Eliza's gt grandfather was Robert Clifford of Bearstead, Kent a well documented right hand slow bowler but left hand batsmen (runs in the family) Offspring decamped to salt Lake City. Her brother was Henry Seath Joel, again well documented in Kent whose son Henry Albert Joel emigrated to S.Africa etc etc. (Google:www.delvillewood/cemeteries/joel%20arras.htm)
good luck

Thomas POSGATE was baptised 09 Dec 1770 in Pickering.
He was the son of Thomas POSGATE and Elizabeth BARKER
The family moved from Pickering to Whitby between 1778 and 1780.
Thomas married twice.
First to Ann TILFORD 20 May 1797.
Second to Elizabeth BONNER 18 Jan 1806.
He had at least 8 children with Elizabeth.
I am a direct descendant.
Please contact me and I will happily share what further information I have.
Kind Regards

Hello,  I came across your post by chance...searching 'Posgate'. I too am a direct descendant of Thomas Posgate. His daughter Sara Elizabeth was my ancestor.

Also my grandmothers maiden name was Towns.

Joan.
