I wonder if you have any information on Licensed Victuallers and Public Houses in Liverpool?
I have a John Atkinson (born abt 1812 in Penrith, Cumberland), as a Licensed Victualler, resident at 66 Lower Harrington Street, Toxteth Park Extra Parochial, Liverpool in 1851.
In 1861 he is shown as a Licensed Victualler, resident at 27 Hurst Street, Liverpool (Would this be the ‘Baltic Fleet’ public house in Hurst Street, Liverpool?). By 1871 he is shown as a Retired Licensed Victualler, resident at 1 St Joesphs Road, Tranmere.
:
John was married to Mary Ann (born abt 1808 in Heswall, Cumberland) and had five children Elizabeth (born abt 1837), Eleanora (born abt 1840), Henry Atkinson (born 1844), Emile (born abt 1846) and Annie Maria (born abt 1848) – All born in Liverpool, Lancashire.
In 1881, his daughters Emile and Annie Maria Atkinson are both shown as Publicans; resident at 95 Park Lane, Pitt Street, Liverpool (would this be ‘The Old Curiosity Vaults’, corner of Dickenson Street and Park Lane now demolished?). Henry A. Shaw is shown as Barman.
Any information on which public houses the Atkinson family might have owned or managed would be most helpful.

I do believe that a Licensed Victualler was someone who sold alcohol from their own house - probably the front room. So he wouldn't have actually ran a pub until he was a Publican.
-
I wouldn't be too sure Lisajj. I've got a licensed victualler in my tree resident at the Turk's Head Inn, if that's not a pub landlord I don't know what is.
-
I don`t know about 1861 , but I was in the Baltic Fleet last week and both entrance doors are on Wapping ...I will ask next week when I go and see if anyone has any history ...I personally don`t think the Baltic Fleet is 150 years old, but I may be wrong....allan :)
-
Per 1881 Gore's :
95 Park Lane was the Curiosityvaults , Hy Dixon Atkinson
27 Hurst Street was a wine and spirit vaults
-
It appears I am wrong regarding it`s age...there are 3 tunnels underneath the pub , used by smugglers and also slaves were shackled under there ...whilst sailors went for a pint
See
BBC - Liverpool - Coast - Stage 8 - Salthouse
Dock (http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/content/articles/2005/07/20/coast05walks_stage8.shtml)
Underneath the pub there are caverns and cellars and stories abound of a tunnel running from the pubs cellar to the docks, through which
in the days of the Press Gang men would be captured in pubs. According to the legend Press Gangs would get men drunk and then take them through the tunnels
and aboard the ships to work, they would wake up with a sore head and aboard a ship in open sea.

He's in the list of Hotels Inns and Taverns in 1860 Gore's, listed at 27 Hurst Street. There is no name given for this establishment. In 1853 Gore's, this address is the residence of a cartowner and provision dealer.
-
27 Hurst Street was on the corner of Hurst Street and Carpenter's Row.
In 1911 Gore's it is the Elmsmere Vaults
-
1863 Slaters has Atkinson, Jas at 66 Lower Harrington Street

Familysearch.org then advanced search

To ShaunJ
Re your answer as per 1881 Gore's :
95 Park Lane was the Curiosity Vaults , Hy Dixon Atkinson
Do I presume that he was the licensee? as Emile and Annie Maria Atkinson were the Publicans.
The son Henry Dixon Atkinson was a photographer and was resident in Denbighshire, Wales in 1881.
Thanks to everybody for leads
-
Forget that Liverpool marriage...this looks FAR more likely
18th february 1834 at Saint Andrew, Penrith,Cumberland,England
John Atkinson to Mary Anne Dixon ...
Extracted record

Henry DIXON Atkinson makes the 1834 marriage of John Atkinson to Mary Anne Dixon look a good bet...

The son Henry Dixon Atkinson was a photographer and was resident in Denbighshire, Wales in 1881.
The Wrexham Advertiser for July 26 1884 has a report of his divorce from wife Mary Ann.

There were quite a lot of Atkinsons from Penrith in Liverpool in the mid-19th century census, a number of them in the licensed trade - were they related ?
One of them was Matthew Atkinson who had a beerhouse on the corner of Penrith Street and Wood Street in 1865. He born Penrith circa 1816. Per the Liverpool Mercury of 3 September 1863, he had been a publican in Liverpool for many years and had built the Garston Hotel.
-
Some mentions in the papers:
Report of a meeting of the Health Committee (Liverpool Mercury 11 February 1863 ):
" A letter from Mr John Atkinson ....was read,. It complained of injury which his property at the corner of Hurst Street and Carpenter's Row had sustained ...."
John Atkinson, Hurst Street, on the committee for the Licensed Victuallers Charity Ball in 1855 (LM January 16 1855)
A letter from John Atkinson 33 Hurst Street, concerning implications of the Sunday Beer Bill (LM 28 August 1855)
Death notice (LM 27 November 1858):
"Nov.19 aged 76 Elizabeth wife of Mr T Atkinson of Penrith, Cumberland, and mother of Mr John Atkinson, licensed victualler, Hurst Street, this town"
There are probably lots more newspaper mentions to find but that's all I have time for this morning !

The Garston Hotel was my local...at the top of my street....a fabulous building with revolving doors...looked more like a bank....sadly burnt out in a fire about 10 years ago.....maybe the Garston Historical Society might have some info on Matthew Atkinson....
allan
http://www.garstonhistoricalsociety.org.uk/
ADDED...according to the Garston Historical Society , Matthew ATKINS owned the Garston Hotel - not Atkinson ??...they may be wrong ?
-
The GHS has got it wrong:
"Garston Hotel - The foundation of a large hotel, which is to be of handsome design, is now in course of being dug in the new Garston road, close to terminus of the railway. The building will be the property of Mr Matthew Atkinson, Mill Street, who has contracted with the railway company to carry the passengers from Garston to Liverpool. It is contemplated that the hotel when completed will be one of the finest in the suburbs of this town.........."
(Liverpool Mercury, 21 January 1853 )

Thanks very much Shaun...I know the secretary and I will tell her...cheers....allan ;)

At present cannot find John Atkinson until 1851. So not sure of his relations were in the trade.
Thanks for all the info.
As a Beginner can anyone tell me how you find out about what trade directories are available online, people mentioned Gores and Slaters. Are other directories available for other places, as I am researching a number of photographers across this country.

Have sent a PM on newspaper and directory resources

7 July 1848: John Atkinson of Lower Harrington suggests a pipeline to run alongside the railway line, to bring water to Liverpool from Windermere (Liverpool Mercury)

Presuming that John’s parents were T Atkinson of Penrith, Cumberland?, married to Elizabeth (b. abt 1782 – d. 19 Nov 1858) - can’t seem to find them?
Then I have in 1841 at Park Lane, Liverpool, a John Atkinson (born abt 1811). Occupation: Publican, married to Mary Ann, Also shown is a Mathew (born abt 1817 - Occupation: Tailor), which may be a brother? and a Ellen (born abt 1839 in Lancashire), which could be his second daughter Eleanora (born abt 1840).
His first daughter Elizabeth (born abt 1837 in Liverpool, Lancashire) seems to be shown in 1841 at Gath Court?, Liverpool with Catherine Devenport (born abt 1822 in Lancashire), Fanny Wilson (born abt 1824 in Lancashire) and Ellen Young (born abt 1814 in Lancashire) - don't know who they are?
Elizabeth and Eleanora are both shown in 1851 with their parents at 66 Lower Harrington
Street, Toxteth Park Extra Parochial, Liverpool.
I think Elizabeth married William Thomas (born abt 1838 in Northwick, Cheshire - Occupation: Bricklayer) and Eleanora married a William Walters Tomlinson.
Any information on John Atkinson’s parents or his early residence appreciated.
-
Prehaps that should have been Mr J Atkinson of Penrith. There is an Elizabeth about the right age with husband John in the 1851 census at Great Dockray, Penrith (also with son John 37, and daughter Elizabeth 25).
There's also this in the Liverpool Mercury for 1 March 1856:
Feb 13 in Warwick Street, of consumption, aged 37, William Atkinson youngest son of John Atrkinson, Penrith
-
There are baptisms at St Andrew's Penrith that seem to fit ...to John and Elizabeth
-
There was a John Atkinson who was landlord of the Two Lions at Great Dockray in 1829:

-
There was a John Atkinson in Dockray, Penrith who was a chair maker. In the 1841 census he is 60, his wife Elizabeth is 55 and with them are James 20 and Elizabeth 15.
The Liverpool Mercury of June 22-23 1863 has the marriage of Elizabeth, only daughter of John Atkinson of Penrith, to Reginald Lawson Rimington at Crosby Ravensworth on June 18th. In the 1871 census Elizabeth Rimington is 46, which ties in.
-
In 1861 in Great Dockray, Penrith we have:
John Atkinson wid 82 House Proprietor born Askham, Westmorland
Elizabeth Atkinson 28 Daughter , Penrith
Caroline Atkinson 11 Grand Daughter, Liverpool
Eleanor Atkinson 9 Grand Daughter Liverpool

Just to say thanks for all the posts - all very helpful
Thank you for taking the time

Earlier this year, I was sent copies of four photos taken by H. Atkinson of Cockermouth. He is not found in any directory of Cumberland, or any census, and I believe he was most likely Henry Dixon Atkinson, but I can't track his movements between 1861 and his marriage in 1869. I know there is one photo in existence which was taken by H. Atkinson of Waterloo, which I assume was Liverpool.

In 1861, Henry Dixon Atkinson is with his family in Liverpool. After that he appears in Cheshire, Wales, Surrey Wanstead and Leyton ?

Hi Bob,
I found him marrying in Everton in 1869 (given his dad's address). This site has examples for sale, by H, Henry and Henry D:
http://www.victorianphotographers.co.uk/index.php?searchStr=atkinson&_a=viewCat&page=1
This is the only site that seems to mention "H" of Cockermouth. I can't find any Atkinsons online (whether H or HD). There was a Henry based in Camden Town in 1871, but the census info suggests he was in London at the time the Cockermouth photos were being taken.
Regards,
Stephen

Two more Atkinsons

Hi Stephen,
Great photos. Checked and he does not appear in the 1869 Crocker's directory for Cockermouth - no Atkinson was listed at all?
Will keep looking
