My grandfather Joseph O'Brien was from Ireland but unfortunately on the census the enumerator has only put Kallina, Ireland.
I was told there is/was a place called Killina in Offaly Can anyone give me any information as to whether this is correct

Hello, I joined this because I saw your post. Have you considered the townland of Ballina? There are several, one in County Mayo, one in Tipperary. The B may have looked/sounded like a K quite easily to a transcriber, or to an enumerator.

Hi Lesley
There does appear to be a Killina in Offaly, civil parish is Rahan. There is also one in Monaghan, civil parish Clones.
This site is good for looking up placenames (hope link works)

Hei Lesley,
Did I suggest Ballina to you at one stage ? I know I've seen reference to Kallina/Killina recently. http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm I wonder if this may help to throw some light on things.
It shows the distribution of the O'Briens, throughout Ireland, at the time of the Griffith Valation in the middle 1800s

it appears as though they may add to your problem but they do look like places worth considering -
Killinlane - Co. Limerick
Killanena - Co. Clare
Killalane - Co. Tipperary
Best Wishes,
Christopher
