Hi, I have a birth year for my GGrandad, and I only have a clue of the place which could have been a pub or inn in Snaith. Can anyone tell me what would be a good way to find evidence? I'm looking at around 1888. I'm stuck at what to try and look at.
Thanks,
Kay Redhead.

First place to try is FreeBMD (.org.uk). It costs nothing!! :D
Make the search narrow to start with, and gradually remove limitations.
I.E. start with name, year of birth, county or maybe district.
If that fails, remove district or county, then year!
Maybe expand the years and/or counties?
Try Phonetic search.
You'll soon get the hang of it!
If all else fails - post a query to RootsChat! ;D
Just realised - Snaith & Cowick was in the Goole Registration District from 1838 until 1974 - in West Riding!
Only Redhead birth I can find in Goole district in 1888 is:
March qtr 1888
Goole district vol 9c, page 973

Thank you so much for your reply. The detail you have found is that of my GGrandad. He used to tell the family that he was "born in a clock" which I can only take to mean the Clock Dial/Face Inn, in Snaith. I'm trying to find out how to prove this, so thank you I will follow your tip!

With the reference to district, volume and page number, you can request a copy of his birth certificate.
That should tell you something!

I have it but it just says Snaith lol! I'm struggling to find his parent's marriage too- they travelled around an awful lot! I'll press on with it- no doubt I'll be on these boards a lot!!
