I'm trying to find the location of 'Butcher house toll bar'. I think it was somewhere near Thirsk. My ggg grandfather was tollgate keeper there in 1838. Any ideas would be appreciated.

you can search for Toll Bars on the historical directories site:

Just tried different combinations in to google and an entry comes up when you put butcher house thirsk, it comes as borrowby thirsk. The maps not up to much but if you persevere may be you can get closer. I notice some parts in the country have an area called tollbar.

Thanks weste,
No luck with Borrowby, it looks lke butcher house there is a farm. I've finally traced it to Kirklington some miles South West of Borrowby on the A1, seems it was on the crossroads of Leeming Lane (A1) and the Masham to Thirsk turnpike. got there in the end! Thanks anyway,
Joe.
