Title: KEHOE-KIRWAN-DALY-O'TOOLE-KINSELLA-HUDSON
Post by: DianneK on Sunday 03 April 11 14:21 BST (UK)
Looking for origin in Wexford for the following Kehoes.
Henry KEHOE c1791 married Johanna KIRWAN c1791 left Ireland 1825 for Canada
Michael KEHOE c1799 married Ann DALY c1805 left Ireland 1828 for Canada
Peter KEHOE c1804 married Bridget O'TOOLE c1804 left Ireland 1833 for Canada
Henry KEHOE c1821 married Ann HUDSON c1828 left Ireland c1847 for Canada
John KEHOE c1827 son of Moses KEHOE and Margaret KINSELLA left Ireland c1848 for Canada and married Elizabeth McCabe in Canada.

I would love to hear from anyone researching these names from Wexford prior to 1848.

I'm headed to Ireland for my first visit this June.  We'll be in Ireland for 23 days.  After Dublin we'll be travelling the Wicklow and Wexford area on our way to Cork and then Limerick.  Any suggestions on what 'not to miss'?  I prefer interesting out of the way places.  Thanks.

Many of the details you are looking for are very early, and before the start of most of any parish records. You need to know which parish(es) these families lived in to check what details might be available, but with a common surname like Kehoe / Keogh they could be difficult to trace.

see :  Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start? (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,498742.0.html)

Loads of interesting place to see in Co. Wexford but two that I'd definitely include on a 'must see' list would be Hook Head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook_Head) - site of one of the oldest lighthouses in Europe, and Duncannon fort (http://www.duncannonfort.com/).
Also nearby are Dunbrody (http://www.dunbrodyabbey.com/abbey.htm) and Tintern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintern_Abbey_%28County_Wexford%29) Abbeys

Thanks Shane for the info on Wexford 'must visits'.

Yes, I know I may never pinpoint the exact location of my ancestors as the timeline is so early for Irish records, but one can always hope!  I've searched without success, all early Canadian records in hopes of finding a notation with something more local than Wexford.

Perhaps I may just find a present day Kehoe in Wexford with Henry in their ancestry!

Of the surnames you mentioned, by far the least common in Co. Wexford would be Hudson. There are just over 50 households listed on Griffith's valuation in the county. It might be worth starting your search by checking into some of these names, in the hope that could lead you to some of your other family connections.

Unfortunately no parish records for Co. Wexford are available online at the moment, but it might be worth keeping a note in the hope that these would be added to a free or pay website in the future.

The Griffith's valuation details are available at : http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

forgot to mention dates for Griffith's Valuation - it was carried out between 1848 and 1864 (date of the surveys varies depending on the location), so just after most of your people of interest left Ireland, but it might be useful to try to track any family that remained behind as a starting point.

for more details on Griffith's see :

Hi Dianne,

I have a common interest in the Kehoe's of County Wexford, I too have a Moses Kehoe!  I don't think it's the same Moses as yours though.  My Moses Kehoe was the father of Catherine (my great, great grandmother) born in Kilmore, County Wexford in 1857.  Catherine left Ireland sometime before 1880 and moved to Lancashire, England where she married my Great, Great Grandfather John Craig (also born in Ireland).

I also made a trip to Ireland two years ago, I was lucky that I discovered their towns of birth from the 1911 census before I went, however it didn't help much as I wasn't able to locate the records I was looking for.

Where your Kehoe's Roman Catholic?  Catholic records were mostly in Latin, I missed the record I was looking for, I discounted the one I found as I didn't realise that the latin for Moses is Edanus.  It was only after I returned to Canada that I was told.
Check this site, it's Kilmore records but there are several Kehoe records on there, you never know your Kehoe's could be from Kilmore too & we could be realted....lol

Katie:

You're fortunate to have the location of your line.
Thank you for the link.  Although I didn't find an ancestor in Kilmore, I did eliminate another area of Wexford and learned a couple more spellings of Kehoe!
My Moses would have been born around 1800.  There is a Moses Kehoe, farmer ,Wexford, Shelmalie, Ballyhoge in the 1831 Tithe Defaulters that is of interest.

Hi Katie

I see you're related to Catherine Kehoe from Killmore, County Wexford and John Craig from County Roscommon? Catherine and John Craig are my great great grandparents too. Are you Widnes based and/or one of the Widnes Craig descendants?

My Dad's grandad was John Craig, born in Widnes and son of John Craig from Roscommon and Catherine Keogh. My gran was Anne Craig who became Anne Kenny.

Do you know or are you in contact with Kathie Mulvey Nee Craig, formerly of Widnes and now living in Canada? Kathie's done a lot of family history research.

Take care

Sean Kenny

There is a mention of a Moses Kehoe in a book about 1798  "The year of Liberty" by Thomas Pakenham.
page 145
"Under torture, Perry made a confession of all his seditious activities since he had been sworn a United Irishman....of party meetings in his own barn at Inch, in Thomas Howletts mill and Moses Kehoes house at Castletown.

Kirwan. I have a record of one of the Clinch girls marrying a Mr. Kirwan of Clonee. The Clinch girl is sibling to William Clinch who fought in the 1798 rebellion. so a date for the marriage of sibling be guessed at ten years? plus or minus 1798. She was from Knockanure townsland, Kilrush Parish.
