My Great Grandfather was John Alfred Sutton he was born in 1879 Belton, Lincolnshire, England. He married Ada Annie Swash on The 14th December 1904 in Belton. I cannot seem to find any birth records for him and the only census I can find him in is 1901 Thorne, , Hatfield, Yorkshire where it states he was a Servant. I don't know what his parents were called, and don't know if he had any siblings. I just don't seem to be able to find any records for him. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

I think Hannah's surname is supposed to be Carlton and her birthplace as Garthorpe, Lincolnshire. In 1881 she is living her husband in Sims Hill, Belton and with them is a grandson Walter Thomas SUTTON RG11/4696 folio 81 page 5

I can't see a marriage that makes this 1881 census possible - but nor can I see a birth reg for a John HOWARD :)
1881 http://tinyurl.com/3tzwat3
1871, I see an Elizabeth SUTTON 28 as servant to a Joseph HAYWOOD
she has sons Fred 10 and Jabez 4.
HAYWOOD = HOWARD? I suspect this was the case. ;)

Looks more like Charlton to me.

Not CHARLTON
-
I agree Geoff. If you look on earlier census returns it's definitely Carlton.
Furthermore, I don't know if it's linked but there's an Elizabeth CARLTON who married George SUTTON in the Thorne registration district in 1861.

They were in the same household in 1861 RG9/3526/5/3

IGI has Elizabeth CARLTON and George SUTTON married on 8 October 1861 at Amcotts, Lincolnshire. Her father's name is given as John CARLTON. This is the same as Hannah CARLTON's spouse in later census returns.

The only thing in doubt is probably the point when George SUTTON left the scene. Perhaps it was before 1871.
