I have a general query about health provision in Hull and availability of records from the 1940s.
In particular I'd like to know about any clinics which dealt with sexual health (VD clinics basically) and any asylums.
Would these places have kept patient records? Where might I find out about individuals who were treated in these places?
Lastly, if a mother wanted to 'dump' her child, for whatever reason, in the mid 1940s are there any children's homes or hospitals where this was done?
Thanks
Andrew

I'm pretty sure that these sort of records are going to come under the '100 year' rule.

If she couldn't care for her child I would imagine that she would have asked for them to be taken into care through Social Services.
There were quite a few children's homes in Hull...Social Services Childcare Team may be able to help if you are looking for a relative.

Hi Carole
Thanks - ironically the relative found me already! She was left by her mother in around 1941 in 'a hospital' and never saw her again. Her mother died in 1945 and her father in 1953 so we're struggling to know why she was left. I do know that she subsequently went to a 'home' of some sort in Manchester until she was 16.
Since almost everyone in the family who's likely to know anything is deceased, I was hoping to find some records...
Thanks anyway

It may be worth your relative making enquiries of social Services/local archives - as she would be the person affcted, the 100 year may just not apply

Hi Andrew...This might help with your initial enquiry as to how to proceed:

Andrew...Where ever she was born...that local authority...is obligated under the freedom of information act... to give her access to her file which usually requires a representative from the authority to assist on her behalf:

Also in HULL there was Dr Barnardo's Childrens Homes, so the records may well be with them.

We all need to know of our roots, where we belong and who too AND why did "I" end up in Care??
Good Luck, hope you find the records.

Her first point of contact should be through Social Services of the local authority who placed her...here is more helpful advice:

Was her mother single by any chance? I was helping an in-law with a similar query. She had ended up in Broadgates hospital after having a baby 'out of wedlock' in early 40s for no other reason than being 'morally deficient' although I believe this went on to her having mental health problems later in life.
Re sexual health, again in Hull it depends whether you're talking about the War years. If the infected was a serving member of HM Forces then the infection would be dealt with by the Army/Navy/RAF and would lead to loss of priveledges and a mark on their service record. For civilians, well I know that there was ward for dealing with social diseases but I dont know where.....this was from a chance remark made by an ex nurse in Beverley. I do have a 1930s pamphlet I picked up about East Ridin Healthcare provision, but it only relates to Sanitoriums for TB, Maternity Services and the Cottage Hospitals for women.
Fascinating stuff! Please let us know how you get on?
