Sara, just for information, on the Scotlands People certificate of "birth, marriage, death or census" page, at the bottom left, there are two small boxes, one with a "Blue" letter "I" and the one next to it has a small "Gold circle" with the letter "E" on it. If you get a faint copy of a certificate up on the web page, right click on the box with the gold circle and this will open up various "enhance modes." By changing/selecting differing ones, you should get better views of what has been scanned by Scotlands People which will make a bad scan more readable. You can also adjust the brightness by using the "Sun" at the bottom right corner, and adjust the slider either up or down.
Regards

Malky.

Sara, my first time on Rootschat and I see that you and I have the same greatgrandparents! How exciting! William and Isabella had four children: Isabella who was my grandmother, William, Robert and John. They lived in Kilmahog, and I'm guessing William the father was from Killin, not Kelso. If your last name is Cumming, you must be the granddaughter of either Willie or John. My grandmother lived most of her adult life in Kilmarnock. Your posts were from 2011, so I hope you are still checking in once in a while
