We have traced my X3g grandfather to Melbourne where he had a drapery business from 1859-1862. From announcements in the Melbourne Argus we find that he became insolvent.
His daughter Laura was born in Bendigo in 1863. That is the last we hear of him. His wife and children returned to England some time before 1871. They appear in the census at Billinghay, Lincolnshire.
Can anyone help us trace William Atchinson? There may be a reference in Betty Jackson's "Bendigo Advertiser Personal Notices 1854-80'. This is out of print. Does anyone have a copy that they could consult for us?
His death does not appear recorded in Victoria BDM records.

Went to my local library today and had a look at the book
"Bendigo Advertiser Personal Notices 1854-80"
Their was no reference to the family name Atchinson. (sorry)
The nearest was Atkinson. (nothing close to your William though)
Searching for similar names I came across a James AITCHISON death 15/2/1854 age 21years, Comm Flat. The reference was from a book called "Where they lie, Early Burial on the Bendigo Goldfields 1852-1870 by Annette o'Donohue & Bev. Hanson. Again no reference to Atchinson.
The Pioneer Index for Victoria (which you probably have seen has)

Logan your last entry is not correct.
This is how it reads I think.

Only guessing, but she may have been WILLIAM ATCHINSON's mother.

This death too perhaps gives us the clue that WILLIAM's father (whose name Paw42 has not mentioned) was THOMAS .
This seems to be death for a child of ELIZABETH CLARK who seems to be WILLIAM's mother making this young man WILLIAM's brother..

Not sure if any of this information is new to you, PAW, and I am also not sure it is helping at all with WILLIAM's death, however.... ;D
The above man JOHN THOMAS ATCHINSON left a will digitised for reading.
He died in Brighton and was a storekeeper.
He left most to his wife SUSANNAH and daughter ANNIE LOUISA ATCHINSON. There were some nephews, sons of his sister MARY (nee ATCHINSON)
A gold watch is mentioned which was, at that time .....
" in the possession of my mother"

Gerry,
The BROWN couple are the parents of the "nephews" favoured in the will of JOHN THOMAS ATCHINSON (described above) who confirms MARY is his sister.
There is a shipping record for the arrival of WILLIAM and ELIZABETH and some children.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Thanks for consulting on-line records and records in archives.
There is no information there that we have not found. It took us years to find it! We'll write up the whole story and post it here.
Still hoping that William Atchinson may appear since the last sighting in Bendigo.
Many Thanks

Dear Gerry,
We missed this the first time we read it. There was such an unexpectedly large response to our original post.
Can you check the date of this entry. This entry in the directory would be the last sighting of William, and back in Melbourne at a different address, rather than in Bendigo. This seems like a major breakthrough for us! This is definitely him as he was William Clark Atchinson.

That is great that William is in the directories of Melbourne in 1869 and 1870. The family lore said that he died in the goldfields of Bendigo. His mother died in Melbourne in 1869 and was buried in Brighton cemetery.
William's brother John was the first to set out to Australia in 1852. He set up a successful business in Brighton. His sister Mary and her husband James Brown came out in 1856 possibly and set up in partnership with John.
William and his family arrived in Melbourne in 1859 (Jan) and he set up a drapery store, but he quickly got into debt. There are several notices in the Argus about his insolvency but none after 1863.
I'm fairly sure he wasn't a master mariner and the william Atchinson who died in NZ is from another branch of the family.
Thanks again for the interest. I wish you had the census in Australia!

Hi Paw42
There is no information there that we have not found. PAW 42
I am saying this in hopes it will be of help in any further searches you may undertake. The above statement suggests that you had a lot of information.
And details you have provided in your last post would have been of great help in our searches.
When you, as searcher, know an amount of detail, it is best to give it all at the outset. Otherwise people have to search it out over time and things do not move as smoothly as they might.
Anyway, perhaps something has been achieved in the hunt :D.
Good Luck!

You may have seen the digitised will for J T Atchinson. It mentions his daughter, and his BROWN nieces and nephews - I didn't see a mention of William or his children - may have missed it though!

I'm really sorry we didn't put up more of the story to begin with. I think we also should have posted it at another time of day as we were asleep and missed the conversation until this morning. We only came across John Atchinson's will, a few days ago. The gold watch was left to his daughter Annie Louise who was only a year old when her father died. John's wife remarried in 1865 to William Norquay originally from Orkney. They had 4 children. I wonder if Annie Louise survived infancy.
William's sister Mary had several children and 3 of them who died in infancy are buried in Brighton cemetery. James Brown died in 1887 (we think) and Mary in 1904. I'm not sure if their sons John William and James Melbourne Brown carried on the business.
Are the directories of Melbourne available on-line? I thought they were on microfiche at Melbourne library. We live in Scotland so my research has all been on-line.Very grateful to LoganH who went to the library to check the Bendigo Advertiser.

Mrs.E.Atchinson could be William's wife Elizabeth. Quite probably in fact. Elizabeth's father died in England in 1870. Maybe they had already split up because Elizabeth wanted to go back to England.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed information about William Clark Atchinson, born in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1830
There is another William Atchinson, born in Boston in 1837, who emigated to New Zealand and the went to America and then went back to NZ where he died in 1923. I thought that this might have been our William, but the dates do not match. The NZ William married in England in 1859, when we know that our William was definitely in Melbourne.
Of course our William Atchinson might have gone to New Zealand or anywhere else after 1870.
Thanks from Sandra

Possibly worth posting on the NZ board if you have not already done so.
The team there may be able to absolutely rule out the man there for you.
I feel it is important to assess all you can, though I agree, the years do look incompatible ::)

William Clark Atchinson was my great grand-father. His daughter, Laura born in Melbourne, was my grand-mother. She married Richard Langford Keeble of Lincolnshire, and their youngest son, Lancelot Keeble, was my father.
Thank you for the research that you have done - it clears up some of the mystery surrounding William Clark.
-
A daughter of William Clarke and Bessie, Marian, died at sea en route to Australia. I have a locket in memory of her that belonged to Bessie - left to me by Muriel, oldest child of Richard Langford and Laura, also William Clarke's grand-daughter and my aunt.

I'm glad you found the Atchinson research of interest. My grandfather was George Keeble the brother of Lancelot and grandson of William Atchinson. George's son Richard was my father.
I knew about the locket inscribed for Marian from my mother. There is one puzzle as on the 1911 census Elizabeth Atchinson says she had 7 children, 3 of whom died. I can only account for 6. The children who survived - Frank(1855), Charles (56),Gilbert (62) and Laura(63) and the 2 who died as infants Marian (57) and Annie Louisa (59). I wondered if a child was born after Laura's birth and before Elizabeth and William separated in 1870.
I wonder if you have any family lore that might say what happened to William?
Best wishes Sandra
-
Update on William Clark Atchinson. I was looking at the Argus newspaper and came across William Cowan Atchison living at Neild Street Melbourne in 1870 so it seems that I am back to the theory that William Clark Atchinson disappeared in Bendigo after the birth of his daughter Laura in 1863.
Mrs E.Atchinson listed in the 1870 Directory could still be his wife Elizabeth who returned to England shortly afterwards as she is on the 1871 census.
